The Thurman Cafe in Columbus is a local favorite of many people. Suffice to say, Son of Thurman lives up to it's namesake.
One thing that is immediately noticeable about the establishment is the much larger dining area than the original. This is a HUGE plus, as you will not be forced to wait an hour or more on busy days. Parking is slightly better, as there is a public parking lot with meters. On street parking looks ample as well, depending on the day.
We dined here on a Saturday in July, a little after 1pm. There was little traffic, and the atmosphere was more sedate and quiet. We were seated immediately by the hostess, and our server greeted us just moments after.
We both ordered unsweetened iced tea. Unfortunately it comes from a soda machine and is not brewed in the restaurant. I would suggest skipping it if you don't like sweetened tea.
Regardless of the beverage, we both decided to order burgers. I had the Jaeger Burger, an onion and mushroom topped 3/4 lb. open faced monster. My wife opted for the Bacon Cheddar Ranch burger, sans veggies. I ordered medium-well, and she ordered medium.
Both are massive sandwiches. Either would be something we both would normally only eat half of and take the rest home. However, we were traveling, and keeping a burger in a car on a hot summer day would be a disaster.
My burger was cooked perfectly to temperature, and was very good. The onions were sauteed beautifully, and the mushrooms were still slightly firm but not mushy. The sauce however wasn't exactly a french-onion dip, more like a thick ranch, but was very good. The entree came with large steak fries, which were very good as well.
My wife's burger was also cooked perfectly at medium. Five or so pieces of bacon, and an ample amount of cheddar. Hers came with onion strings, which were delicious.
Overall, the value for the money was very fair. You could get a lot less at a lot of other trendy burger joints. Our bill, with our standard 20% tip, was just shy of $40.00. Burgers run at $11.49 or more, but you get a so much. 3/4 lb. or more. With what we packed away, we didn't need to eat for the rest of the day.
One small complaint is the price of soda/tea. At $2.29, I think it could be a little cheaper.
Service was top notch. Unobtrusive but very attentive. Drinks were filled before we needed them and there was always a smile involved.
Bring your appetite when you go. Skip lunch or breakfast. You will need the extra space.

Read moreWe've never found either of their locations live up to the hype their name implies. But we keep going back every so often in the hopes that maybe we just caught them having an "off" night. Famous for their burgers, we find they're just...large. The patties themselves never fully seasoned and sometimes bland or dry, the toppings overpower them and aren't ever consistent. The burger itself should be the focus, not just the stuff piled on it. Their fries are delicious but most other menu items are offered with potato chips or you can pay an upcharge for something else. Pizzas are pretty good. Recently, I was served a huge grilled chicken Caesar salad and it was 100% iceberg lettuce (how???). With no menu description to warn us, it was an unexpected disappointment. Portions are very generous, but the prices feel inflated due to ho-hum ingredients.
Atmosphere is always loud and lively, which we expect and enjoy. But we can't understand why it's never clean. Food all over the floors and in bench crevices, grimey lamp shades, dusty film on everything that isn't eye-level. It all appears normal until you start really looking around you and you notice all the cracks and corners are holding years of buildup. A good deep-clean is needed and it makes me question what the kitchen must look like. The restrooms suffer the same fate.
Service there is pretty average, wait staff is friendly and attentive. The time it takes from ordering to eating is often long, 30 minutes or so, which is why we're apt to notice so much about where we're sitting and how much attention it needs.
They've always had a good concept, but just seem to fall short across the board at every visit. We'd love to see higher quality ingredients, focus on quality vs quantity, better side options, full menu descriptions for all items, burger consistency, and a cleaner environment. With a few tweaks and perhaps if they took a bit more pride in the establishment itself, they could be a mind-blowing...
