I almost ordered seconds, and I was already full. The complimentary fresh chips and salsa were excellent. I'll admit, I tried to fill up on them so I'd have more leftovers to take home. But one bite of the food, and I knew I wouldn't be bringing anything home.
Best Mexican food I've ever had, and I've had a Mexican. I had the enchiladas (green sauce) with charro beans and rice...oh, my goodness, so awesome. The beans were cooked perfectly, and so much flavor, it hit all the right notes. The rice was perfect, fluffy, and again, flavorful. Most places serve the rice and it's dry and bland. This was the best rice ever. And don't get me started on the enchiladas. Even their sour cream was amazing. I always thought sour cream always tasted the same. But whatever they do to theirs, they're doing it right.
Don't tell my wife I was the one who stole her leftovers.
Oh, and our server (didn't catch his name, but the receipt said Neftali) was awesome too. He was pretty on it with the refills, even with our large party and the other tables he had. And when I pointed out that our son hadn't gotten his food (I think he might not have caught the order. My son is two, and I am super soft spoken), they brought out an order within two minutes.
I will say that the restaurant is not very kid friendly. They have high chairs, crayons, and paper for the kids. But none of their chairs seem inviting to kids. Just to be clear, they were super nice to my kids and my nieces, (even when my 2 year old escaped and made it into the kitchen), just that the restaurant is clearly geared towards adult customers.
All said and done, I'd drive for an hour and a half for Mexican...
Read moreOn a previous visit, we were fairly disappointed in the food and in the drink selections. Bartender was not knowledgeable how to make a Long Island iced tea, which is a pretty basic drink at almost any bar except for this one. We decided to give it one more chance since it’s been a couple of years and nothing has changed The server, while nice, was not knowledgeable about anything at the bar and that’s fair, not everyone will be. The chips were old/stale tasting and the salsa was watery, as well as having a strange after taste. They said they didn’t have the ingredients for the drink I asked for but looking over at the bar, I could see two of them. And the bartender may have also been looking on Google for how to make the drink. I’m not entirely sure about it, but that is my suspicion. The manager was kind enough to comp the queso, which was disappointing, and we had only ordered water. As we were leaving we saw the bartender arguing with another customer, about what I am not sure nor do I care to find out. Needless to say we will not be back again. Good luck, everybody else!
Edit to add: We ended up going 15 minutes out of our way to Chuy’s; MUCH...
Read moreSecond time at Villa Grande, although this time we went to the Denton location. No appetizer on this visit, but the complimentary chips and salsa were excellent. As tempting as it was to order the birria tacos again, this time I went with the tacos al pastor. Good, good tacos. Well seasoned, tender pork with grilled onions, good avocado crema, fresh pico, chopped red onions and cilantro to add, a wedge of lime: perfect!! The rice was also tasty and the charro beans were excellent, just like the first visit. Pro tip: dump some of the rice into the charro beans. Wonderful combination. Bride had the chile relleno with brisket. She said it all tasted great as well, but it did produce the minor complaint of the evening: the batter coating was much too thick. She said the chile itself was surprisingly spicy. I find that a little surprising, because it looked like a poblano pepper to me, and those are seldom known to be particularly hot. Wasn't in the mood for a brew on this particular visit, but since we were seated near the bar, I noticed Modelo Negra on tap. Next time!! And there will be a "next time." Recommended,...
