Well shoot. Tried going out for the first time since Covid. Morale has been really low and I have always found food to be one of the best healers. Of course I wanted to go try a local place. So I decided to pick this establishment after hearing great things. I, like a lot of humans, have a torrid love affair with breakfast burritos. So ,of course, how could I turn down that wonderful option when I saw it on the menu? Ya'll it was a struggle. As seen in the photo. The burrito came out and my excitement started to drop and I saw that instead of a steamy beautiful tortilla wrapped the joys of breakfast I had this plate with just cut strips of unmelted cheese, lined up as erratic as kindergartners attempting to keep social distance. Panic now sets. I never send food back. How can you send food back when you are out getting a meal?! Especially with everything going on in the world?! Nonetheless after internal debate, I asked the waitress if she could maybe take it back and if the cheese could be melted? Burrito comes back, and plate is 'warm', but alas the cheese strips just stare at me....mocking...tormenting..Everything on the plate looks the exact same. Now there is something new though, the edges of the burrito are cold to the touch. There was obviously nothing done to rectify it. Waitress said that is the best they could do. I ended up not even trying a bite. NEVER HAVE I EVER DISRESPECTED A BURRITO BY NOT TRYING A BITE! Ya'll... I just couldn't. After many years working in the service industry I have never known a place that couldn't heat cheese? So then I ended up feeling just like a complete idiot, crying silently to myself because I am the hungry girl crying over a breakfast burrito. Only reason why this isn't one star is because the waitress was sweet and my partner was wise and just got chicken. The chicken slaps. Still, way too expensive of a morning to be so...
Read moreMy fiance' and I visited Bird during the area's art walk this last Friday night. We did not have reservations since we did not know where we would end up so I would understand that a table may not be available. However when we mentioned that we did not have reservations to the hostess it seemed like she might pass out from how unthinkable it was that we did not call ahead. Luckily there was some bar space open and we gladly sat at the bar to enjoy ourselves.
The bartender (now our waiter) was pleasant but was very slow in taking our order. First it was wait to order drinks, then wait to order appetizers, then wait to order dinner!
For an app, we ordered the hummus plate which had about a cup of really good hummus that appeared to be homemade with a spicy topping. I would definitely eat it again. The only draw back is that we saw it in the kitchen window for about 15 minutes before it got to us. It is hard to watch your cold veggies sitting under a heat lamp for so long! The issue seemed to be the pita bread since saw the kitchen add it to the plate last and then it made it way to us.
Dinner: I got the Chicken and Waffles. I do NOT recommend. The chicken was literally burnt and I had a hard time cutting through it. The gravy was cold and starting to congeal already. The gravy had a good flavor if it had been warm. The waffles were light and fluffy and I did enjoy them.
My fiance' got their ribeye which was amazing! It was perfectly cooked, seasoned really well and came with a great sauce.
In conclusion, I think they have a kitchen timing problem where things from different stations are not coming out at the correct times so you end up with cold burnt chicken but a good steak or warm pita and veggies when only the pita...
Read moreThis place has been referred to as an outstanding breakfast/brunch/lunch place but I'm going to review it for the dinner offerings is has.
First off, like many small-proprietors and farm-to-table restaurants Gaia is set in a small brick house with a simple and quaint, yet elegant setting. On warmer evenings the patio and outside seating area would be perfect to take in the sights and smells of south pearl street. The indoor seating was warm and inviting, especially on a crisp, cold, fall evening.
Our server was very relaxed and chill, yet attentive and conscious - balanced. He was familiar with all the offerings, made great sugestions, and kept on top of everything.
The meal itself was perfect portion sizes. The flavors and pairings of acidity and fattyness of this ancho pepper, wine reduction sauce with the fattiness of that duck breast was awesome. The Asiago scalloped potatos were baked perfectly too...
Everything here cries out local, natural, quality.
I thouroughly enjoyed my dinner experience here and had time to relax and talk after the meal (wasnt run out by a waiter trying to turn tables).
I'm eager to see this place continue to grow its dinner offerings. I have not had any breakfast or lunch meals here yet, but it's bumped up a few spots on my list of places to further checkout.
Great value for the price as well, I might add. If I could offer up one thing to improve- while I was able to find a great beer from the list and most of the beers on that list were definately sufficient, it would be to offer a few more beers to select from - but I understand the costs of having stranded inventory when you're such a small,...
