My friends and I went to Satchels this week. Overall, we felt it was okay and would not make a special trip to go back. From the start our waiter was not very knowledgeable about the wine and food. We wanted to order a bottle of white wine and to know some of the differences between the wines. It would have been nice if there was a brief description on the wine menu describing each wine. The waiter kept going back to the bartender and asking the differences between the wines. Furthermore, when we went to order and ask questions about the food and appetizers again the waiter was not very knowledgeable about the food and would give us basic answers. He also could not give us any straight recommendations. I personally find it annoying when places say everything is good and cannot list their favorites. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and the food was okay. We ordered brussel sprouts, duck fat fries, lamb and lobster sliders, and mussels. The brussel sprouts were undercooked and unseasoned, the duck fat fries just tasted like normal fries and were overcooked and some were even soggy. The mussels were good but they didn't bring out any bread for the mussels. That is another pet peeve of mine is not having some sort of bread to soak up the mussel sauce. I tried the lobster sliders since I am not a fan of lamb, and you barely tasted any lobster and really just tasted the mayonnaise and tarragon. My friends who had the lamb said the lamb was overcooked and again unseasoned. Overall, it seemed that most of our food was overcooked, undercooked, or under seasoned. Also, I don’t know if our waiter was new but they should really make sure the wait staff is more knowledgeable and has a full understanding of their drink and food menu. Overall, we are not rushing back and would rather go to other restaurants in the area. It’s a nice set-up but they need to work on consistency with their food and making sure their wait staff fully...
Read moreWhen friends said they loved this place and wanted to meet us there for dinner last night, we agreed, however, being gluten free, and not seeing great options for me on the online menu, I called ahead to check. I got a woman on the phone who seemed a bit put out that I was asking about GF options. When she said she didn’t know for sure, I asked her to ask someone who did know, and then she insisted they could accommodate my restriction. (This reply used to mean that I could have a salad, and I’m so tired of having to settle for just a salad while my friends get good options. However, in the last few years, better restaurants have focused on really making sure those of us with restrictions feel welcome with GF pasta and bun and other substitutions, so I hoped for the best.) When seated at the restaurant, I asked about entree GF available options and I was told I could choose from the skirt steak, modified, have the burger without the bun (a burger w/o bun is usually very disappointing) or I could have the king salmon salad, the most expensive offering on the very limited menu. I felt guilty for choosing the most costly option, the salmon SALAD, but thought it should be incredible, at $31.00. This salad was simply a small portion of tasteless, dressed, chopped romaine with a few random slices of strawberries, topped with a flavorless piece of skin-on, extremely expensive salmon. One of my friends asked how it was and I said that it was very disappointing and at the least needed lemon and salt. I should have sent it back, but didn’t want to make my friends feel badly for their restaurant selection. Two in our party of four had the burger and loved it, BTW. My friends ordered dessert, but I got to watch them enjoy it as there were no GF choices offered. Needless to say, my husband and I will not be going back...
Read moreWent for NYE celebration with my gf for a 6:30pm reservation. It was fairly busy, but there were a few empty tables. Parking was easy to find around the corner. We had table seating and we were extremely cozy with the tables on either side of us.
Our biggest gripe was the service was very lacking. Every interval of the service felt like we had at least 15 minutes of waiting. The couples at the tables beside us were visibly getting impatient as well. Maybe this is an anomaly since it was a holiday, but that wasn't the vibe I got. Also, our interactions with the server were limited - it would have been nice to have gotten some kind of overview of the menu and its offerings.
The food was mostly great. For apps, we had the mini lamb rib chop ($15) and the mushroom fegola ($11). It would have been nice to have gotten a bit more than a small piece of lamb, but I understand it's expensive generally. For mains, I had the 8oz flat iron steak ($37) and my gf had the pan seared salmon ($34). I was pleased with the steak, while my gf felt the salmon was a bit plain and didn't live up to the expensive price tag. For dessert, we split the tiramisu ($11), which also happens to be my favorite. It was quite a large piece and we found it tasty.
Overall, I was slightly disappointed in the experience. Satchel's didn't "wow" me, and if I had a choice of trying somewhere new and returning, I'd...
