Celiac Disease Friendly (NOT a dedicated gluten free facility but extremely knowledgeable and I did not get sick)
So today (3/4/20) was my first time coming here. I have Celiac disease which means I'm ACTUALLY allergic to Gluten not just a diet. So even though it's easy to find places with GF menu's, it's VERY hard to find places with GF menus that have items that have low to no risk of cross contamination.
Luckily though, when I called to see if Wahoo's was even an option for me, MARCUS answered. He told me "you bet, just ask for me when you get here".
When I arrived first thing I noticed was the SUPER SICK building full of stickers that looks like customers put up EVERYWHERE, snowboards, skateboards, ski benches & just super rad and cool looking stuff. Feels like a tune shop that sells tacos lol.
I got in line and I was called over by a younger lady to take my order, I mentioned my allergy and Marcus immediately must have heard me and asked his customer to switch with me so Marcus could be the one to take my order. He broke EVERYTHING down in terms of what my options were and WHY they were safe. 95% of the time I eat out, I don't get the "why" part, making confidence of no gluten in my food go WAY down almost ruining the meal. With Marcus though he gave me so much peace of mind I wasn't worried even the slightest, even watched and heard him go talk to the cook who was going to be making my meal.
Absolutely amazing experience from a super cool restaurant, great prices, high quality taste amazing menu options, best customer service in terms of catering to my disease/allergy in a very long time. Marcus, you are DA MAN, man! I will ABSOLUTELY be back, if not for just the food but the atmosphere & customer service alone. Keep it up guys and hope if I come in on a day when Marcus isn't working that the person was somebody trained...
Read moreI regret to inform you that Wahoos Fish Tacos, the once weird but reliable fast casual fish taco place known for its scorched earth surf & skate stickered ambiance has jumped the shark.
I walked into the Northfield location at the peak of the normal lunch rush to find the place mostly empty. A younger couple occupied a booth, sipping beverages from paper cups as a lone boomer struggled awkwardly in front of the cashier, perplexed by his choice of rice and protein. This seems a bit...odd, I thought.
When it was my turn, I confidently approached the cashier and expertly placed my order. One spicy fish bowl with white rice, white beans, and some red sauce, please.
The cashier took my order, and shared the total. "THAT'LL BE $19.50!" she said. Alarmed, I assumed she must have doubled my order. No, I explained. Just one bowl please. She looked at me inquisitively; now I was the boomer.
She had my order right. One fish bowl, $19.50. I took my L like a man, wincing a bit as I swiped my credit card, but never letting on to the true financial devastation this seemingly innocuous order had caused me. My children will eat nothing but hot dogs and top raman for the rest of their lives now. Forget college. Not even a State school will take them.
I limped back to my office, and ate the bowl in disgrace. It was fine, I guess, but the value proposition was simply too radically imbalanced for me to really appreciate the nuances of my recently frozen hunk of fish.
Goodbye, Wahoos, and good luck. You're...
Read moreMy son and I were going to Target in Northfield and I mentioned to him that I used to really like Wahoo's when I was younger. I worked across the street from the Lodo location when I was a teen. He said he really wanted to try a fish taco, so we dec to drop in after we were done shopping. The held on to the original atmosphere, laid back with the surfer/skater vibe still in tact. The place is impeccably clean as well. We were promptly greeted by Raphael. He walked us through the menu. He was welcoming, helpful and patient. Its refreshing to see a new generation with that kind of work ethic. We order a few fish tacos and I had a jalapeno margarita. The additional salsa bar is a new touch (not offered in the 90's). The tacos were huge! Everything was clearly cooked fresh. Even the margarita was well balanced, spicy enough, and thankfully no tajin!
Going out to eat can be incredibly disappointing these days. So our experience this afternoon was remarkable. We will definitely be returning customers. I'm happy to share this experience with my son. It brings back good memories and allows us...
