A quirky little Mexican restaurant located along side Buford Hwy in Doraville. The inside houses a small bar tucked away in the back corner with the remaining floor space is occupied by square tables situated between ceiling columns and rectangular booths along the walls. There is an enclosed patio available for outside seating which is perfect in the warm weather. Although Buford Hwy run along in front, the constant hum of the traffic does not detract from the patio ambiance.
The food is Americanized “authentic” Mexican which tastes better than most chain Mexican restaurants. The menu contains what one would expect from a Mexican restaurant, with vegetarian selections available.
The house margaritas are strong, the salsa is tangy, and the meals flavorful!
The service is super quick which makes this location a must for lunches! Perfect for families, business lunches, or a romantic evening out on the town.

Back in the seventies, there were chains of Mexican restaurants that all had similar menus. You could depend on the Speedy Gonzales or combo #14 to be the same at each of them.
Monterrey is steady and dependable. I ate there today and it tastes just like it did when I first learned to drive back in high school.
As soon as I learn to drive, I took my dates here. In fact, I've taken lots of gals here, even the ones I married. There was one guy who waited on me from the late 70s until he died about 15 years ago. I miss him.
The chips are crisp. The guacamole is very smooth. I was hooked on the La Changa for many years but had the taquitos Mexicala today. They were beefy and the lettuce was fresh.
It's not fancy, it has some brick walls and the others are wallpapered in brick. But the service good and the food is consistent. Old guys are steadily waiting on you with a smile. I had a big meal for less than $20 including tax and...
Read moreThe best part of this dining experience is that I did not get too sick afterward. I honestly have no idea why the other reviews you might see below give 5-star ratings and rave about the best ever . Perhaps they are influenced by nostalgic memories of how good it may have been 30 years ago, or perhaps the restaurant owner pays them to leave good reviews. Unfortunately, I cannot claim to have shared their experience. The fact is, this is a below average, hole in the wall Mexican restaurant with poor service, bland food, store-bought salsa, and stale, moldy, leftover taco pieces for "chips." (I paid the price for those nasty chips a few hours later.) Also, as in the real Mexico, "Don't drink the water." As for the prices, they are quite average, not at all a bargain. I tried not to "judge this book by its cover" -- the tired building exterior and sticky menus -- but in this case the "cover" was a fairly accurate depiction of...
