After years of hearing people gush about Kyoto, I took my parents there for lunch. HUGE mistake. The fish was NOT fresh. The texture screamed "old fish", as did the taste. They tried to hide the taste by putting wasabi between the fish and the rice, but the nastiness of the seafood still came through. There's no excuse for serving old fish at any time, but we were there right after they opened for lunch. Exactly how long had that fish been sitting around, if it was already off at opening time? My mother had a tempura shrimp roll, and even that tasted old under the layers of crunchy coating. We are too close to the coast for people to accept old fish on their plates! This is Dothan, a quick hop from Florida's beaches; people should know how seafood should taste. The rolls were also poorly made and fell apart as we tried to eat them.
Despite there only being two other diners in the restaurant, the server never once came out to check on us once the food was delivered...no refills offered, nothing. I have no idea what the staff was doing during such a slow day, but "their jobs" was definitely not on the list of what they were up to. We had to get up and perform a search of the place and shout into the back in order to get our check. After such a gross and negative experience, don't think I didn't briefly consider just walking out--and I despise crooks like dine-and-dashers.
I've lived around the country and had sushi in all corners, good and bad. I'll be honest here: Dothan has never had outstanding or even great sushi. But Kyoto was below even mediocre. We'll never go back. Time to try...
Read moreOne of the best sushi places I've ate at. Me and my wife love all types of Asian food! So when I say this place is good it is really good. First the miso soup was some of the best I've tasted it had just the right amount of saltiness and it actually had taste! Some of the other miso soups I've had are bland and always seem like that are just something they give you to just have on the table until the real food comes. But Kyotos miso was so good it felt like part of the meal. And what I mean by that is that it was one of the things that you have on your plate that even though you are full you just feel you have to eat all of it because it's so good. Anyway enough about the miso soup. We also had the wontons and those were delicious as always. I cant remember exactly which sushi rolls we got (gominesi) but they were both delicious, well rolled and all around the taste was perfect. The atmosphere was really great also, very open layout with a little bar where you can see the chefs cooking. The service was decent they weren't over the top great but they filled our drinks and brought our food out in a reasonable amount of time which is really the main point anyway. This is a place I will happily be going to again, especially for...
Read morePretty terrible experience. We were there for almost 2 hours and not because we wanted to be.
Let's start with the service. We didn't know who our waitress was, or really who the wait staff was. It wasnt busy. The tables were half full. We had to ask some random waitress if we could order after sitting there for 20-ish minutes. Had to stop and ask a bus boy for water at the one hour mark. We got our sushi after being there for an hour and a half.
Food- the fish wasn't very fresh. Warm, thin and not flavorful. Even the wasabi was not very spicy, like how do you mess that up?? The third random waiter we saw that delivered our food (after we saw it sitting on the counter for several minutes ) either told us the wrong name or we got the wrong thing. But we had been sitting there for so, ridiculously long that it wasn't worth waiting to see if any other servers would reappear to help us. The miso soup was thin, generic broth with a few pieces of seaweed and nothing else.
$85 later we left still hungry, disappointed and feeling like they probably should have paid us for our time.
Edit- forgot to mention the bathrooms. Handle locks but doesn't keep door shut. Toilet doesn't flush. Trash all...
