My name is Destiny, and I was humiliated, discriminated against and laughed at by the general manager Midge Anderson. I placed a pick up order for a dozen oysters with crab stuffed jalapeños and a 20 piece hot chicken wing at 6:46pm on 8/6/22. My total was $77.26.
When we arrived, my husband went in to pick the order up. Once he came back to the car, I realized the oyster order was wrong. It was missing the crab stuffing and jalapeños. So, he brought the order back in and asked if they could fix it or add the stuffing to the side. We didn’t have a problem with paying. Midge told him, “no, we can’t fix the order or refund you.” My husband then came to let me know.
I decided to go in and ask one last time. She told me no as well. I explained to her when I called the order in, I specifically asked for the crab meat stuffed oyster with jalapeños. However the waitress, entered in the system mamou oysters. At this point, the gm started accusing me of asking for Mamou oyster instead of what I originally ordered. She told me she doesn’t believe me and I should’ve been more specific. She also told me it was my fault and there was nothing she could do to make it right. When I tried to defend myself, as I was stating the name mamou.. she started laughing at me. I have a disability (speech impediment) and I often stutter. This was extremely offensive. Next, I asked her does she have a recording of the call, so she can hear the conversation before accusing me. She said, “no, we don’t have one and even if we did it’s still your fault.” At some point I asked for the owners information, so I could share my experience and she said, “Theres no point, He won’t refund you either.”
I visit Gumbeauxs often and if the waitress ever makes a mistake, they bring it to the back and make it right. In this case I was pretty much humiliated and accused. Before I left, I asked one last time.. if she could atleast give me the stuffing on the side. After 10 mins of back and forth, She said “yes for an additional charge of $12.95, can you even afford that?” I said why would you even insinuate I don’t have the money to pay? At this point I just felt discriminated against as an African American woman. This humiliation happened in front of the customers. I was hurt, confused and offended. At this point, I just wanted to get my food and go, so I told her please ring me up for the side. She had the waitress to do so. As she walked down the hall, she told me to shut my mouth and said, “This will be the end of this discussion!” I left because I felt mistreated at this point. I didn’t want to risk anyone doing anything to my food, nor did I want to continue to be embarrassed or laughed at. My food was wrong and to be treated this way was absolutely terrible!
I decided to write this review and reach out to the owner.
I do not recommend this establishment because of the GM. I do recommend the food and the waitresses who have always made things right...
Read moreFirst time visiting and we arrived at 5:15p and was seated about 40 mins later on a Saturday. While waiting, there was a middle aged couple displaying a little too much affection for a family restaurant. Necking and kissing and moaning was too much. Once seated there they were again seated right in my eyesight. Get a room, please! Finally the ambience was none, very family friendly, any attire goes, the lighting was dim but could have been a tad brighter but then you may have noticed more unappealing things like cleanliness. I commented to hostess it seemed crowded and she said that it wasn’t nearly as crowded as usual so what I perceived as crowded was because the restaurant layout was so cramped. There was an upstairs and downstairs. We were seated at a small end table for two. The ceiling fans were going full force, the air conditioner was plenty and I was uncomfortable with the draft overhead. We came because I love crab claws and my daughter saw them on menu from a previous visit. It was listed as Market Price. I asked what the market price was and for 1/3 pound you pay roughly $22.95. The serving size was ample, photo taken after half eaten. I ordered side salad with flounder po boy sandwich as they had run out of coleslaw. Waitress was accomodating and attentive. After waiting 40 min for a table and quite a long time for food, we were starving. My daughter wanted to sample the clam chowder and the waitress brought back an almost full cup. My daughter said the clam chowder was delicious. The Po Boy arrived and my daughter took smaller half and there was a piece of lettuce dangling and she just pulled off and placed on plate, she began to bite down on sandwich and she noticed something dark colored moving on her plate and took her fork and moved it only to realize it was a sqiggly worm. The waitress was near us and we called her over. She stood looking but the lights were dim so it took a second before she could actually see something moving. For a moment I thought she appeared to imply it was a small thing which it was but I don’t expect to see it in my food. So beware of your lettuce. She took the sandwich away and asked if we wanted replacement and because we were still hungry I said yes but no lettuce please. Unfortunately by the time replacement was brought out we were full and the fact we had shared a side salad that I had ordered, we started to feel a little queasy thinking about the possibility that we may have eaten one of those squiggly things in our salad. We took sandwich to go. It went into trash when we got home. The waitress didn’t alert the manager and there was no effort to comp us...
Read moreThis restaurant food is amazing. In fact, it was one of the selling points for my husband and I when we chose to buy our new home in Douglasville Georgia. However, December 30, 2023 I was highly disappointed. We flew my mom in for the holiday season and she was returning home the day before New Year’s Eve so I told her that the last restaurant we would take her to would be Gumbeaux’s. I was so excited to bring her to this restaurant, because the food is always amazing and the staff is always friendly. We arrive around 12 noon. Prior to my mother and I entering the restaurant she mentioned to me that she was feeling a little weak so when we stepped into the restaurant, I asked one of the hostess if she wouldn’t mind grabbing a chair for my mom to sit down. The hostess looked as if we were asking for something major, but she managed to find another employee, and they brought a chair for my mom to sit down. We were also giving menus and we changed our mind about dinning in due to the seemingly chaotic atmosphere with staff, running around, seeming lost and not being acknowledged to put our name on their list for seating. I waited at the bar and close to 20 minutes of not being acknowledged by ANY STAFF MEMBER to place an order at the bar and seeing the bartender, highly flustered ,snappy with the employees, as well as the customer sitting at the bar, the bartender, making direct eye contact with me, but chose to totally ignore me we chose to drop the menus off on the bar and go to another restaurant. Imagine, hyping up a restaurant to a person who most likely was weak because they were hungry and leaving out with absolutely no food. Awful! Not sure if we will ever return. My one star review was based on Customer Service only because unfortunately we were unable to taste the food for me to review on the food’s quality but this is definitely not the Gumbeaux’s we came to when we first moved to Douglasville. Truly a sad...
