Sushi House — Restaurant in Downers Grove

Good food but....Not being from the area I was excited to try a new sushi place. The front desk at our hotel said the guest had good things to say about Sushi House. We went on a Friday around 7:30p. When we got there is was pretty busy. We didnt care where we sat (outside or inside) but we're told no tables were available & it would be a 10 minute wait. As we were waiting a mother, daughter duo walked in and were offered to sit at the sushi bar, shorty after anther couple walked in & were also offered to sit at the sushi bar. At this point I'm wondering why we werent offer to sit at the sushi bar since we mentioned not caring where we sat. As we continued to wait a couple at a table finished and left. As the table sat empty and cleared I was beginning to feel forgotten. I asked why we were not seated at that table & was told because we only had 2 people & that table was for 4 people & it would only be another 10 min wait. This responce didnt please me because there were only 2 people sitting there previously, but we had already invested time in waiting. When we were finally sat at a table (for 2) and were given a menu & a piece of paper that had some (not all) the specialty rolls on it. We ordered drinks & an app, when our drinks were brought out the waitress asked if we were ready to order. As we started ordering we were stopped & told if we were ordering sushi we needed to use the piece of paper. Some of the rolls we wanted werent on the list & we needed to hand written them at the bottom, which seemed a little arduous. The reat of our visit went fine although we never received our appetizer. The sushi itself was delicious! The Downers Grove roll was the best. The tuna seemed very fresh. I recently dined at this establishment 10/3/24 and had a generally positive experience. The food was excellent, and we were seated very quickly, which set a great tone for the evening. Our server, Tanya, was a true standout—she was not only nice and attentive, but her kindness and hard work truly enhanced our dining experience. We felt well taken care of throughout the night, thanks to her efforts.

However, I do feel it’s important to mention an aspect of our visit that was quite disappointing. During our meal, we encountered another server, a gentleman, who displayed a very nasty and hostile attitude. To make matters worse, we couldn’t help but overhear him yelling at Tanya from across the room in an unprofessional manner. It was disheartening to witness this kind of behavior, and if we could hear it, I can only imagine how many other diners were affected.

Such disrespectful conduct should not be overlooked, as it casts a shadow over the otherwise lovely atmosphere of the restaurant. We sincerely appreciate Tanya's hospitality and her efforts in making our night enjoyable. I called ahead of time to reserve a table for 9, as we were 3 families getting together. Reached there on time, and the restaurant was already filling up. We got to the tables in no time, courteously accompanied by the front waiting staff. Our group ordered the 2011 special, the angry crab roll and uncle jimmy roll. The 2021 roll's colorful tobiko was beautiful to look at, super crunchy on the bite, and with the salmon and tuna that gave multiple layers of flavor in the palette. But the Angry crab roll was one step better- surprisingly. This was probably one of the freshest sushi we ever had, and gave a sense of perfection and completeness to it. The uncle Jimmy roll was the fried one, and was crispy on the outside, rice perfectly cooked, and tuna and salmon perfectly layering in taste. We had green tea to go with the sushi, and our friends had Pad Thai as well as avocado rolls. They seemed pleased with the meal, as we were.

On top of good food, the ambience and the service added to the great experience. I will happily recommend Sushi house to anyone interested in good Sushi, and I have already added it to my to-go list when I have friends or...
