Grandma's USED to be a great place to go. My last visit was New Year's Eve and it was all around disappointing. It was not busy in there at all, only a couple of tables. We got some apps (boneless wings--they've really gone down hill, taste like they're out of the microwave) and our waitress took our order and then left us sitting there for an extended period of time. I had ordered a pasta dish and my salad, which would typically come out quickly, was no where to be seen. After a good long awkward period of questioning where the waitress disappeared to, we noticed the booth right next to us (who had been there before us) was also sitting in disbelief wondering where she went. Eventually the manager ended up bringing their food out and their entire bill was comped. Our food finally came out after, delivered by our server, who insincerely apologized for the wait and still avoided her other table until she checked back on us again awhile later. After all of that waiting the food wasn't even good and we ended up getting to-go boxes immediately because we had been there for so long already. We didn't complain and didn't get out ticket comped but the entire experience was completely awful. I'm sure our waitress had NYE plans and was off doing her side work and trying to get out of there, not caring that she still had tables. I definitely told multiple people and heard a lot of the same in return. My entire family refuses to go back here whenever it is mentioned. I, however, have plans with friends soon and this was chosen place, I am hoping they redeem themselves somewhat on my...
Read moreVisiting Duluth for first time on vacation and we were lucky to find Grandma’s. We loved our food and Heather gave us fantastic service with very good recommendations! She said her favorite sandwich was the Godfather (sliced roast beef on a baguette) with the upgrade of onions, green pepper, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese. My husband got the Walleye dinner with a side of wild rice which comes with gravy which they call sauce. Walleye had great flavor and very crunchy coating. The rice & gravy were so good and they give you lots of rice. He does not like wild rice in general, but is now a big fan. I got the godfather with a side of the chicken wild rice soup. Loved everything I got, the au jus was rich and delicious. We had to try the onion rings which were huge with nice wide slices of actual onion. Again lots of crunch in the coating. We of course could not eat everything so Heather gave us au jus and tarter sauce to take with us. We got one slice of their specialty cheesecake, chocolate amaretto to go also. Yummy! If we get a chance to go again before we leave town, I would love to try the chicken tetrazzini (another Heather recommendation), the wild rice burger or the stuffed wild rice mushrooms…or probably almost anything else on the menu. I guess they sell the wild rice soup, frozen. Too bad we are traveling. The restaurant was decorated with fun authentic looking memorabilia. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars was because the bathroom was a...
Read moreI had heard that Grandma's in Duluth was a must experience when visiting Duluth. Upon arrival, the first thing you notice is the decor. It is heavily based on early 20th century commercial tin signs for products from the early to mid century. Overall the decor was neat and interesting. The menu came next. I was surprised at how many items they had on the menu and I sought out the items listed as "House Speciality", as I figured these items must be grand in order to have that label attached to them. I think that I must have a different understanding of the term than Grandma's. I ordered the Beef Cheese French sandwich as it sounded delicious. What I received was a very doughy roll that was supposed to be a French baguette (not), with pot roast, some canned mushrooms in beef bouillon poured all over it, topped with cheddar cheese, a white cheese, but missing the touted cream cheese from the menu. Also on my plate were French fries so dry that it seemed as though they too came from the mid 20th century along with the decor. My wife decided to order her favorite dish, walleye. She chose the beer battered walleye, fresh mashed red potatoes, and a side of steamed veggies. What she received was a panko breaded walleye filet and potatoes that were cold in the center and luke warm on the edge, all on a bed of squishy veggies. I do not recommend that anyone eat at this establishment. Utterly...
