My friend offered buy me lunch since I drove him to an appointment. He wanted Mexican food. Neither of us know much about Durango, so I Googled. We settled on La Hacienda, but I got confused about where the restaurant was, turned in too soon, and ended up here.
The first thing I noticed as we approached the entrance was the sign on the door announcing the restaurant does not accept credit/debit cards or checks. This place is cash only. My friend is a cash guy, so this wasn't a problem for us, but I know lots of people don't carry cash anymore.
When we walked in, we ended up next to a long counter. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to order there or what. I didn't see a menu there. A lady behind the counter politely asked if it was just the two of us. When I said yes, she said we could sit wherever we wanted. My friend led us to a booth.
The dining room had the vibe of a church hall or maybe an old diner in a small town. It certainly wasn't hip, but it wasn't pretentious.
Our server was very nice and professional. Our food got to us super fast. I couldn't believe our food was on the table so soon after we ordered.
Side note: There are no complimentary chips and salsa served before the meal. If you want chips and salsa here, you have to pay for them.
I got the vegetarian plate. It came with two very small cheese enchiladas, a side of whole pinto beans with some cheese on top, a tiny pile of lettuce and diced tomatoes, rice, and a sopapilla.
The rice was especially bad. It didn't look like rice with some tomatoes in it. It looked like stewed tomatoes with some rice in it. It was quite wet, soupy even. I took one bite, and it was awful. It tasted like canned tomatoes to me and nothing else. I do not typically waste food, but one bite is all I took of this rice, and the rest stayed on my plate. I did not care for it one bit.
Neither the beans nor the enchiladas were very flavorful. The beans had practically no flavor and needed salt, and the only thing I could taste of the enchiladas was salt. I couldn't taste any spices in either.
The sopapilla was very, very good. It was hot and not at all greasy. There was a bottle of honey on the table and I used it on my sopapilla liberally.
My friend got a large plate of food and an additional two crispy tacos. He ate everything on his plate with no complaints.
I brought home half of the enchiladas and half of the beans that I didn't finish. I'll try to doctor up these leftovers with some spices...maybe eat the beans on a flour tortilla...maybe put a fried egg on top of the enchiladas.
I would not eat here again. I would go so far as to give a hard no to anyone suggesting Griegos as a place to eat on a group outing I was part of. I just don't think the food here is...
Read moreGriegos on main Street in Durango, Colorado is trash. To start with if you are not a local your Debit / credit car or personal check are not accepted. They seem to be running some kind of shady tax evasion scheme saying cash only. We had to use the expense atm in the corner to get cash. Second the uppity waitress Tiffany with the less than pleasant demeanor gives you little to no time to look at the menu or place your order. She brought burnt chicken nuggets hidden under fries to " cool off" for boogie. Josh's food was in a to go container. My Carne asada plate was supposed to be the carnitas plate. The first bite I went to give boogie of my food we got a long straight hair that was under the food all the way across the whole plate and over the edge. We were not able to eat any of it. The i don't care look on her face when we asked for the check as soon as the food arrived told is it was not worth complaining about it. We paid the bill and left their disgusting food there. We are...
Read moreWe enjoyed revisiting this restaurant from our high school days in Durango. The restaurant is very clean. Staff is friendly. Service is quick. The prices are great! We split the Pancho Plate and ordered a taco a la carte. Plus a soda, chips, and salsa. Our bill came in right under $20 plus tip. This a cash only establishment, but there is an ATM if you forget your cash. They charge for chips and salsa. The tacos are served soft, nicely flavored ground beef, with the corn tortilla lightly cooked. The tamale was dry so we added salsa and mixed it with the pinto beans. The burrito with green chili sauce was good, flour tortilla was fresh. The green chili sauce was just right with heat and not too acidic. The pinto beans were cooked perfectly… we wished we would have ordered rice to go with our plate. The salsa is homemade, packs a little heat, and is a little acidic but tastes good on everything. We saw locals which is a great sign that you are eating at a favorite restaurant....
