We discovered Jimmy's a few years ago and loved it. My husband still loves their catfish since it's always fresh and tasty. However, today was the last time I'll visit this location after the terrible customer service. I'm guessing they have new management since I didn't recognize any of the workers up front. I don't know the kids name, but the teen working the window shouldn't have been the one they had in drive-thru. He wasn't at all knowledgeable about the menu or what the term combo means. He first told me to pull around to the window and then claimed I was too 'soft spoken' to be heard, even though the guy walking behind the drive-thru menu could hear me just fine. So that was the first thing he said to irk me. Then he gave me my total even though I told him I still had more to add to my order (several times, in fact). I ordered the catfish combo and a 2 hot dog combo. I asked him if he was going to ask me what I wanted to drink with those combos after he gave me my total and he proceeded to tell me that they didn't come with a drink. When I argued the validity of his statement he still tried to tell me it didn't come with a drink but he could ring it up. Well he rang up my hot dog combo with all items separately, so I paid more than I should have once I asked him for the receipt (since it didn't seem correct). When I questioned him, he said just stared and started doing something else. After a few times of him not getting the point that he overcharged me by not ringing it up as a combo and owed me $ back, I just asked for a manager. She told him combos do indeed come with a drink (he said he never told me that...but the fact he rang up the combo incorrectly kind of said all there was needed to say about that). She calculated how much she owed me by taking the taxed combo price from the non-taxed separate item total. So they only gave me back half of what I was owed but at that point I was just too fed up to even bother asking them to fix that discrepancy. At least she tried to sort-of make it right. But I shouldn't have had to spend 5 mins repeatedly trying to get him to ring up my order correctly and then making sure it was taken care of when he made a mistake. I even asked him if he was new since that would be more understandable but he just looked at me like I was stupid for asking and said no. The food was done pretty quickly and was fresh, so I can't complain there, even if he didn't give us any straws or napkins or silverware to go with the meal like they...
Read moreWe frequently Google “best __” (food item). Then we take a road trip and rate the food on a 1-10 scale. This took us to Durham Sunday for hotdogs. We went to Jimmy’s Famous Hotdogs on Hwy 55. We ordered the Nathan’s hotdog all the way =9, chicken wings =6, onion rings =10, crinkle fries =5 and fried catfish =15! We like to sample a lot when we go somewhere new and out of the way. They have FANTASTIC catfish! How weird is that? We only ate one filet and brought the rest home for catfish Po Boys. I make a mean tarter sauce. We got it to go then ate off the tailgate in a shopping center because it was nice and sunny. We were nearly attacked by a flock of seagulls. SEAGULLS!! Luckily some woman started feeding them McDonalds fries so they left us alone.
Anyway, it was a nice drive and good food. If you go, don’t be discouraged by 3 stars because people complained about the wait. What they don’t tell you is they fix it fresh so the delay is worth it. Health rating is 96. Since we were fighting of birds, I only took a picture of the catfish at home.
UPDATE FOR ONION RINGS: I should’ve described them. They seemed to have both beer batter and just enough Panko to add more crunch. I don’t like Panko only because they hurt the roof of my mouth. I think you would get onion in every bite but I fold and cram it in, in...
Read moreThe Highway 55 location I would not recommend for anybody to eat. This explains why no customers was at this location at 5:47pm today June 2, 2025. Since they are suppose to be hot dogs specially, I would not recommend anything else to eat at this location. This was my first time visiting this location for hot dogs. I ordered the #1- 2 hot dogs with side of fried okra and tea. Paid 9.56 This was the worst meal I have ever had in the City of Durham for hot dogs. The okra was fried to a burnt crisp, hot dog tasted as if it had been sitting in water too long which didn’t have a hot dog flavor, chilli was dry, the slaw seem soggy with an onion mixture taste. The cashier asked if I wanted my change, then had to count out .44 twice then told me to make sure she gave me the correct change. I called back to talk with a manager on duty. None was there and the young lady was not sure when a manager would be at the location for me to discuss this meal. It was definitely not worth $10. Therefore, go down the street to another restaurant to get a better meal from...
