Let's be clear... Jigger's is a legitimate diner. That's right, an actual 1950 "Worcester Dining Car Company" diner. These days diners have fallen by the way side & many so-called diners aren't capable of providing the true diner car experience.
Diners were common place during the industrialization of this great nation & the North East was the hub of this nostalgic culinary experience. Today Rhode Islander's & travelers can still capture the experience at Jigger's Diner in East Greenwich, RI.
Located in the heart of downtown East Greenwich. A place often associated with snooty eateries, salons, & shops. Jigger's is a bustling taste of blue collar nostalgia worthy of all walks of life.
While Jigger's has been in existence in or form or another for 100 years as of 2017, the East Greenwich diner car has only graced Main Street since 1950. That said, Jigger's has had its fair share of owners & incarnations, but it's current proprietors deliver the goods that keep locals coming back for more.
Stephen & Karie Head began serving up fresh homemade concoctions in 2012 that keep folks lined-up waiting for seat in the cozy eatery.
In true diner fashion, the food fair has a homemade appeal with flavor to boot. Whether it's breakfast, brunch, or lunch, Jigger's has you covered.
Local faves include many of the crafty omelets or creative bene offerings. The Surf & Turf Benedict often found on special is a real treat & the Steak Bomb omelet is sure too please I might also recommend trying a New England tradition known as Johnny Cakes, but don't put them in your pocket like our forefathers did. Smother these cornmeal cakes with butter & syrup for pure colonial goodness.
The menu is wholesome & honest, the staff are friendly, & the space is small, but you be glad you came. Stop by & tell them...
Read moreMy husband and I came to the diner for the first time in many years for a Sunday brunch. When we walked in, the diner was very full but there were a couple of seats open at the counter. I looked around and saw no sign saying please wait to be seated or any indication we needed to put a name in. Lana, an employee, was there, but said nothing to us, so we went and sat in the two seats at the counter. After taking off our jackets and settling down, Lana came and very loudly reprimanded us in a manner that people could not help but notice, and told us that the seats were taken. We told her we didn't know and that there were no signs and that she hadn't let us know that we needed to put our name in. She was very rude, very loud, and it was extremely embarrassing. We went to the front and after a while she came and got our name, and we were seated a short while later. I would recommend that Lana be trained in the proper manner to discreetly let a customer know that there is a different protocol. The place was obviously busy, and obviously they were a bit short staffed, but it was not necessary to be shouting above the din of the restaurant to reprimand us. Our dinner took a while to come out but was good, and our waitress Misty was very good and far more polite, and obviously more professional in serving us. I would like to recommend that the owner please put a sign up at the front to let new customers know that they should be putting their name in for seating, and I am hopeful that Lana will learn that this is not the correct way to handle this type...
Read moreMy experience at Jigger's Diner was a rollercoaster of emotions. It was like being on a first date that starts with a long, awkward silence but ends with a delightful surprise.
We began our culinary adventure with a two-hour wait outside, where we pondered the mysteries of the universe and the meaning of life. As it turns out, patience is a virtue, and we had ample time to exercise it!
Once seated, we were treated to a slow-motion service experience. Our waters arrived fashionably late, making their grand entrance after our meals had already graced the table. But who can blame them? Even water wants to make a splash sometimes.
Our food must have been taking the scenic route, as it took over 20 minutes to reach our plates. I opted for the "Johnny Cake & Sausage Benedict" - a bold move at $13.99, considering the wait. However, these scrumptious Corn Meal Johnny Cakes and Sausage Patties were like an unexpected punchline that saved an otherwise dull joke. My taste buds rejoiced, momentarily forgetting our prior struggles.
In the end, I must say, Jigger's Diner is not for the faint-hearted or impatient. While the Johnny Cakes may have been a tantalizing treat, the lengthy wait and sluggish service left a bittersweet taste in my mouth. I can't say I'll be returning, but those Johnny Cakes will always have a special place in my heart...
