Constantine’s on the Bay — Restaurant in East Lyme

I really didn’t want to complain. It’s been several weeks since we dined here. I get almost sick when I think about the Steamer Clams I was served. I will probably never order Steamers in a restaurant again! The appetizer should be awesome to start out the meal. It turned me off to the rest that was served! The clams had an odor and they were covered with sand and a grey oily silt! The broth to dunk was a thick oily grey silt so I couldn’t even clean them. It was awful! My husband tried to make a special night out so I didn’t want to say too much. The service was awesome but getting bad steamer clams ruins it all. The necks were so long and hanging out limply like they were dead before they were even cooked! I still can’t get that odor out of my head. I felt sick for a week; like I ate a bag of oily sand. The stuffed shrimp I ordered was ok but it said cracker crumb seafood stuffing on the menu. I wasn’t prepared for the bits of peppers in the stuffing which I’m allergic to. So this was not a good night for me. It was well over 100$ for the two of us and we left a good tip. The servers are amazing! Bread is not served with meals here. Salad is ala carte. In response to owner…. Yes it is possible to not have best fresh fish retailer or the way you store your products. The clams were NOT washed properly! They were scooped from the bottom of a bin including the silt and sand! They were not fresh! I’m 64! I’ve made my own steamers for over 40 years! They were scooped from the bottom and thrown in a pot! They should have been rinsed as many times as needed. The oil was like oil from a boat! Sorry I worked in restaurants when I was young! During my recent visit to Constantine’s on the Bay, I was thoroughly impressed by both the exceptional cuisine and the outstanding service. The calamari, burger, crispy chicken sandwich, truffle fries, and French onion soup with short rib were all bursting with flavor and expertly prepared.

Our dining experience was elevated by our waitress, Anila, whose engaging and personable demeanor made us feel as though we were conversing with an old friend. She was attentive, kind, and ensured that every moment of our meal was enjoyable. Upon mentioning that we were visiting the area to celebrate my birthday at Mohegan Sun Casino, Anila surprised us by organizing the waitstaff to sing “Happy Birthday” and presenting a delicious slice of cake with a candle. This thoughtful gesture brought my mother to tears and made the evening truly unforgettable.

I truly was happy when this place opened again. Sadly, the food quality was sub par. Fish and chips were bland and soggy, short ribs were something out of a tv dinner. Pasta was super over cooked. Food came out much too quickly to be made fresh. Food looked very 1980s style. Servers timing was terrible, rather than waiting for a break in conversation, she kept interrupting. She came over 4 times in 5 minutes to see if we were “ready to order” but disappeared after the meal was served. Wouldn’t refill coffee, after being asked three times. My mother (who had birthday balloons and clearly was celebrating) barely touched her food. My son could not get water, as she cleared his glass before dessert and was thirsty.
