Look, I get that this place is "An El Paso Tradition", but not all traditions are great. My first trip to Chico's was over a decade ago, brought on by the glowing praises of several random people in my life that happened to be from El Paso. Upon trying the flagship rolled tacos, swimming in watery red sauce and questionable shredded cheese, I was pretty underwhelmed. Now here I am years later, back in El Paso, deciding to once again try this place to see if my previous judgement was in error. I can now confirm that it was not. These things are pretty bad, y'all.
I've had plenty of rolled tacos in my life that were actually tasty...usually on the west coast. Apart from that, I've also had plenty of their tasty siblings, flautas and taquitos, so I'd like to think that I'm coming from a place of experience...no matter how much sauce and cheese you put on these things, they're just not good. Even when waterboarded with red sauce, these tough sticks refuse to soften up, making it feel like you're eating glass filled with overcooked meat.
I will say that this particular location is quite the upgrade from the old spot I visited years ago. It's clean, roomy, and the staff seems on their game. Unfortunately, they stick with the "Cash Only" policy, which is pretty annoying in 2022. The surprising lack of a drive-thru is also an interesting choice. I was smart enough to also grab a bean burrito as a backup, and thankfully, it was passable by fast food Mexican standards. However, if you want that, just find a better local joint, and enjoy a wider spectrum of delicious food from south of the border. It's time to let this...
Read moreChicos used to be a relaxed, inexpensive experience....one of the main reasons it became so popular in El Paso. A single order of 3 flautas was $1-2 a few years ago. Today, $4.14 for three store-bought flautas with cheap grated cheese in watery tomato sauce is absolutely asinine. El Cometa is real food, freshly made, has a $10.99 Al Pastor con Queso plate that easily makes 6-8 tacos with as many awesome condiments you want from their free salad bar. I just don't see the appeal anymore and I've been one of the last in my family and friends to keep supporting Chicos, but today I'm finally calling it quits. I just spent $17 on 3 singles and a small coke here and I feel robbed, and a little dumb to be honest. You can get two full plates of food at Applebee's for $13. You can dine at Peter Piper Pizza and get a large pepperoni for $16. Heck you can even order amazing Mediterranean dishes on DoorDash that feed two for $18. Chicos has lost its way, and also, why do they just want cash all the time? It's definitely suspicious. I'm forever gone from your extremely overpriced food that probably costs $1 to make one order of your Sam's Club flautas, Chicos. You are exploiting, completely ripping off the very same people that have supported you all these years. It's my time to let go, and apparently for countless of other El Pasoans as...
Read moreLong post, but absolutely made our day and is definitely worth noting!!!!
Chico's is Chico's of course. Delicious EP food. But what brings me to the comment section this time is an amazing act we witnessed today.
As we sat down to enjoy our late lunch, we saw the Security Officer, Officer Aguirre (Allied Barton Security I believe but not 100% sure) quickly make his way towards the Southside entrance of the business.
We thought maybe there was a disturbance because he moved rather speedily, but that wasn't the case at all.
Security Officer Aguirre was very observant and in doing so noticed a group of patrons approaching the entrance, assisting an elderly veteran in a wheelchair.
Security Officer Aguirre ran to the entrance door and opened it for the group, allowing them all to enter without missing a step.
This really gave us hope in humanity because we were recently the victims of theft by someone in our circle, and it had us doubting it.
We live in a day and age where people are quick to leave negative reviews and comments with bad experiences, but when employees go above and beyond, they are rarely discussed. (Bad experiences typically overshadow the good.)
This amazing act did not go unnoticed by any means, and Security Officer Aguirre should be commended for his actions and...
