We regularly enjoy Mexican food at a number of places in the greater Puget Sound area, and as such, Maguey's was an interesting and very mixed experience for us. SERVICE: Lots of 5 star reviews brought us in (passing through town on a hiking day), and while the service was consistently friendly throughout our visit, it was often difficult to get a server's attention, and the time between visits to our table were surprisingly long. EXCELLENT: Nothing we had was oversalted, and all the veg ingredients seemed fresh and of high quality. GOOD: Fajita chicken, onions, and peppers were tasty, as were the veg for my daughter's veggie fajita (though the flour tortillas were rather small and stiff, not fresh). JUST OK: Our 3 dessert items were all "OK," but not good enough to order again. Refried beans were also OK, but not memorable. DISAPPOINTING: Chips were not warm, and salsa, beans, and veg dips were all less flavorful than we are used to in other places (beans were bland, salsa liquidy & less spicy than we hoped for). The rice served with our meals had clearly been sitting in a warmer for a long time and was bland, clumpy, and stiff and only barely warm when the sizzling fajita skillets arrived. VERY DISAPPOINTING: My wife's seafood enchiladas were unlike any we have seen anywhere else. Barely cooked veg ingredients were mixed with cooked salad-sized baby shrimp and imitation crab meat. The assembled enchiladas were clearly not baked, and there was VERY little sauce covering only a part of the stiff tortillas. This was a very unusual and not appetizing version of an enchilada, and my wife did not finish them. OVERALL: I felt genuinely convinced that everyone working here sincerely wanted their guests to have a great experience, but either we caught the kitchen on an off day, or their understanding of the cuisine is very different than what we have experienced elsewhere. Locals clearly love it (busy and lots of 5 star reviews), but we will...
Read moreWe just walked out. They were decently busy which is a good sign. We sat down and were given the chips and salsa. And that's it. We sat for half an hour waiting on someone to at least take our drink order if not our food order. We watched someone else walk in after us and they were served beverages and were able to place their order just fine. I finally got the servers attention and her reasoning was that they were busy. She started to take our order then but I was a little too frustrated to stay so I told her we were just gonna go. She said "sounds good, sorry about that."I understand being busy and not always being able to take an order as promptly as you would like. But there wasnt even an attempt to assure us that they would be right with us. I know they are fairly new and still need to work out some kinks. We might try again after a few more months of being open. Just wasnt happy with this...
Read moreI would not recommend this place if you are looking for good Mexican food. I am from Texas so I know good Mexican food and this just isn’t it. I had went to another Mexican place (Tapatio’s in Issaquah) earlier in my trip so based on my experiences there so far plus these great reviews Maguey’s has I had high hopes in the food quality, flavor and taste but I was severely disappointed as this was not good. It was so plain. The only thing I enjoyed here was the salsa. The queso is not great.. it was edible but then our food - chimichanga and pastor tacos were unflavored. I could not even eat it. The service was only okay as well. If you want good Mexican food then go to Tapatio’s in Issaquah, don’t even bother...
