This place comes across as a Denny’s style diner so it was years before I tried it, which was a mistake.
First came an adorable, bubbly and wholly pleasant server that I convinced myself not to propose to. To top it off she was actually competent and completely knowledgeable on the menu. The server is a full half of the experience, so I was pleasantly inclined from the gate.
Second is the right half of the menu: the prices are not decent, they’re low. It’s as if the crazy inflation missed this place: a great, satisfying breakfast and a generous tip and I was out $20. I assumed the food would be mediocre.
Third is the food: Humboldt County really has some of the best food on the planet with steaks better than I’ve had this side of Chicago’s London Chophouse, seafood fresh off the boat, great sushi, great healthy vegan and vegetarian food, a huge focus on sustainable and farm fresh food and Mexican food that convinced my friends from Acapulco to move here as it was better than any they’d had. But I thought our diner scene wasn’t great. I was wrong.
Had the food been mediocre I’d still have added this place as a favorite spot: I work graveyards and there aren’t a lot of early morning options. But the food was excellent. Not four star Michelin quality but you aren’t looking for that from a diner. Which is better: blue jeans or a tux? Depends on what you need it for: a tux is great but don’t try to limb trees in one. This was a hearty, fresh, perfectly seasoned, piping hot, blue jean breakfast. In short, it was as close to perfect as you can get without falling in.
I took a look at their dinners and I was quite surprised at the prices: if the quality holds I will be eating steak and salmon dinners several times a week. This place is a gem, and I’m glad they’re next to the motels: I live in Humboldt but I’m often coming through on a semi with an employee that I put up in a motel for his reset and now I don’t have to tell him to wait till the afternoon then walk two miles to Oldtown if he wants great food. Really...
Read moreI decided to visit Kristina’s this time, its located at 250 W 5th St, Eureka, CA 95501, right next door to Best Western plus Inn. The food at this restaurant has surprisingly impressed me, to the point I am doing this review. At first impression, I was not impressed with this restaurant. It seemed to be just a standard family-oriented restaurant that you can find anywhere in Eureka, or throughout California. Upon entry I was greeted by Esther, my waitress, who promptly seated me at a table with my friend. Although, they do not carry peanut butter, I was able to finally settle on the country skillet. Which is normally scrambled eggs, green onions, country cut fried potatoes, topped with country gravy. I changed mine up a little bit, and had eggs over medium, instead of scrambled, and hashbrowns instead of country potatoes. I have to say that when my food first arrived I was not impressed, it looked like a regurgitated vomit from a newborn. To my surprise, it was very delicious. While I was eating Esther, ensured that my glass was never empty of my drink.
Esther, Abbie, Paige, and other employees of Kristina’s restaurant are very friendly, welcoming, and professional. It is there engagement with me during my meal, shortly after my meal, and their attentiveness to my needs, and the delicious food, that will ultimately drive my decision to return to this establishment. I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of food, customer care, and friendliness of the staff. Do yourself a favor and stop by Kristina’s restaurant for some amazing hospitality mind will only good food, you sure will be glad you did. While you’re there, say hi to Paige, Esther, and Abbie and mention...
Read moreWe stopped for dinner while in Eureka overnight. The reviews sounded positive and we were hungry! I ordered the Fiesta salad, think Taco Salad. I had grilled chicken on mine, I could have had ground beef. My husband ordered a meat lovers omelet. The wait was a little long, but they were really busy with take out and eat in customers. When our meal arrived I was so pleased with the appearance of my Fiesta salad. But... tonight looks were a bit deceiving. The basis of the salad was very plentiful, but the lettuce was sopping wet and left a weird taste to the entire salad. Like the wash from the lettuce was the flavor. There was no dressing involved, I mixed the toppings to make the taste more enjoyable, but it wasn't much help. The chicken was a mix of slices and cubes of breast, it was a little light, but very flavorful. My husband enjoyed his omelet greatly, but found a weird hard thing in the eggs. I hate to put a good place down, so constructive criticism. The place is good, just needs a little tightening. I want to add an edit here. The owner or someone acting on their behalf offered to comp us a meal of we were still in town, and told me to PM them. I did hoping to catch a quick breakfast on our way out of town. No one answered my pm back and so the chance to fix...
