Checking in was painless as the staff was kind with all of my questions. Upon getting to my room, I noticed that due to the electrical (which is not wholly modernly designed understandably being the building was built in the 1920s), there were no outlets in the room that were to be found out in the open or at least conveniently located to charge electronics without having to physically move the bed and side table out mid-floor plan to gain access to the low-placed available outlet. Although this ended up not being an issue, it was at first concerning.
The second day of my stay, I needed to shower in order to get ready for the wedding that would take place the following day. After turning on the water and waiting for it to warm up, I noticed that there was no hot or warm water even after consistently checking it every minute for at least fifteen minutes. In fact, due to the unwanted cold weather and rain that the area had been experiencing, the water was frigid beyond anything I would be willing to jump into - so I ended up just washing my hair. Between all the events taking place over the weekend while I was in town, having to travel back and forth to various obligations, it was not my first priority to call the front desk and make a stink about the water situation. Therefore, I did not give the EI an opportunity to move me into a different room. Furthermore, I had no desire of relocating all of my luggage and belongings in the room to do so if was needed to change rooms. It was not an ideal situation by any means. But I don’t think this was the most disappointing part of the stay.
The morning I am scheduled to check out, I approach the front desk to hand my room cards back and to check if there was anything else needed for checkout. There was no attendant at the front counter, nor a way to reach them unless I decided to call the building. My ride and I waited at the front desk for about 5-8 minutes before someone came by. My additional person (ride) was needing to use the restroom so she asked to be let into the bathroom. We kindly asked if my guest could get into the locked restroom and the front desk employee was hesitant to allow her in and it took much longer to come to the conclusion to let her in. She did end up unlocking the door. When I was finally able to describe to the front desk clerk that my entire four night’s stay I was unable to shower due to the water issue, I asked if there was even a slight chance for a small comp/discount on the room as it was uncomfortable and less than desirable. The front desk clerk agreed that it was undesirable, took my key cards, and instead of offering resolution, she avoided the question, made little to no eye contact, and simply walked away before the conversation was resolved. I stood at the front desk for an additional 5-7 minutes because I was not sure where the clerk went because mid-conversation, she simply walked away and outright ignored my concern. I decided to leave it at that because it likely was not worth trying to bring up again if the clerk was not seeing fit a resolve or competent customer service relation as it would dealt with at any other hospitality establishment.
As someone who has worked extensively in customer service, training positions, and facilitated theoretical and practical CS for years, I was disappointed to say the least. I know oftentimes a customer has the feeling of entitlement towards something they may not be owed, but at the very minimum, an explanation should be offered whether or not a resolution can be offered by the clerk while the customer is standing there. Perhaps situations like these should be covered or briefed with employees to make sure they are covering all the concerns of a guest before the clerk walks away to busy themself with something else.
Just in case this does happen to anyone else in the future, look out for such issues that may cause an inconvenience for nearly $200/night at a hotel that was less...
Read moreThere are several reasons I cannot recommend this facility.
Upon our arrival I could tell it would not be satisfactory. The desk clerk advised we could not cancel the reservation, but we did cancel the additional nights.
Parking is on the street or in a nearby unfenced and poorly lit lot. The staff said there are cameras, with monitors in a room adjacent to the front desk. No one, I was told, is designated to monitor the cameras.
There is a small lot on the property with room for fewer than a dozen cars. Good luck.
If you value the security of your car/valuables, this arrangement may lead to a sleepless night. This hotel is in a neighborhood that, based on my observation, seems questionable.
Getting your stuff from your car to your room is a pain. You can unload at the sallyport and go up stairs into the lobby. Or, temporarily park in the rear and move your things through the lobby to the elevators.
The rooms seem small. Ours was. Hot water seemed to be an issue. I found it quicker to use the bathtub rather than the sink. I did a test and discovered I got hot water from the tub faster than the desk clerk answered the phone.
The hotel's website was very misleading regarding breakfast. It promised " ... breakfast with eggs, pastries, and more." It had a picture showing that. Reality was coffee and a bag which, I was told, has one donut. One donut does not equal eggs and more. Other reviewers have commented on this. It doesn't take much effort to provide yogurt OR edit your website to be honest.
If you use ice, beware. There is one ice machine (2nd floor). If you need a microwave, there is one. In a common room on the first floor. (Our room had space for a microwave, yet there was not one. Perhaps the hotel's electrical system could not handle the load?)
I mentioned the small room. But the bed we had was awful. The second worse mattress I've encountered in my hotel-stayjng career. Because of the mattress and stress over my car's security I did not sleep well. I'm glad we left after one night.
Wifi only works in the lobby, we were informed.
We asked for a refund. No word yet on whether that will be granted.
A lot of reviews glow about the hotel being old and historic. That may be, but I stay at a hotel for relaxation and safety, not old pictures on the walls. Otherwise, you might as well sleep in an art museum.
It seems impressive that a lot of VIPs have stayed there. It does not impress me. In situations like that I wonder if there were other hotels available for them and if they were given a free room in exchange. I don't know.
I also wonder if they stayed more than one night. I didn't.
Update: based on what I've seen in other reviews I pressed the misleading website and got points to stay free at another property. I suggest that approach.
It's important for us consumers to hold businesses responsible any time they have misleading...

I come to Eureka every 3 mos for work. My new company has a cap on nightly hotel fees, and this time of year my normal Holiday Inn Express in McKinleyville is way over budget. I turned to hotels.com to see if I could find something decent. This hotel had an “Exceptional” rating on the hotels.com site. I took a chance and booked for a night.
Upon arrival, the old historic hotel was clearly in need of some love. The exterior is in desperate need of paint and repairs. For it being such a historic landmark you’d think the owner would want to keep it in its prime condition. The inside was beautiful, with gorgeous original architecture and ornate furniture. One of the reasons I booked here was to be able to eat at the on-site restaurant. Eureka is not a place you want to be walking around at night, especially as a solo woman traveler. The homeless population is heavy. The homeless+drug user population is even higher. And this hotel is smack dab in homeless territory. So imagine my surprise when I found out that neither the restaurant nor bar were even open or functioning anymore. There is nothing mentioned about this at hotels.com or on the hotel website. I gave three stars for location only because it’s a short drive to amenities, not because it’s in an overall good area.
I get to my room only to open the door and am immediately hit with the smell of mold/mildew. My bathroom wreaked. Then I see that the pillows on my bed are the size of couch throw pillows (photo). The bed was like a concrete slab. There was no WiFi (the front desk clerk stated “WiFi is guaranteed in communal areas”(so in other words, don’t expect to use it in your room) which was also not disclosed when booking. The TV didn’t work, and my toilet had obviously not been cleaned before my stay. There was dried “matter” all inside the bowl. The vanity had ZERO room to place toiletries. Parking was across the street, but at least it was gated and locked from midnight-6am. But the old phone in the room was neat, as was the hotel furniture and decor.
The breakfast is very much a continental. No prepared hot foods. There were microwaveable breakfast sandwiches, toast, pastries, unripe bananas, yogurt, and dry cereal. But hey, they did brew Starbucks coffee.
Lastly, the front desk staff weren’t very welcoming or friendly. In fact I felt like I was a burden when checking in/out. However, a maid on my floor that I came across was very pleasant and friendly.
Will I stay here again? No. Was it the worst stay ever? Also no. It got the job done for a decent price, but it’s “cheap” for a reason. For just one night it was fine. For anything more than one night, I recommend...
