Hey moneybags, you’ve found your tacos! Tired of spending sane amounts on south of the border street food? Come on up to Evanston where you can spend INsane amounts. Why spend less when you can spend more?
Ok, the food is fine. Stingy but fine. But it’s ludicrously priced for what you get. Hmmm, the enchiladas look like a deal. Oh…you want meat in them? You know, like, how most enchiladas have? Well that’ll be SIX more dollars! Way to hide the price. Clever. Want a glass of La Crema Pinot that you can buy in bulk at Costco? Well that’ll be more than you pay at the fancy French restaurant downtown with the imported rare wine that’s unique. Your wallet will be impressed if your pallet is not. But hey this is for the new money folks who are impressed by cost.
Ok back to the tacos. Three good bites per. When I was growing up my high school cafeteria had something called a “taco snack” and this was more of a taco snack. The whole tiny-taco thing is so 2015. But the prices aren’t!
Anyway my wife and I each had the two-taco “platter” and a glass of wine with chips and salsa. Like a bare minimum of an order. We weren’t all that hungry. With tip and tax it was $100!! Are you kidding me?
Fly to Austin, visit the food-truck park, get similar of not better food, and you still might be ahead. Plus Austin is cooler than Northwestern. No offense wildcats but your school doesn’t even have a dive bar. Gotta study!
Service was fine. We asked the bartender if we could get tacos ala-cart. She said we could leave off the beans n rice. “Same price?” “yeah”. Um… ok, that was at least worth a chuckle. They could give us less for the same price and call it ala cart.
Summing up, if you can’t tell, I’m less than impressed. Actually I’m a combination of amused and pissed off. Mexican food is a tradition of value and care. I lived in California and routinely paid a fraction for more interesting...
Read moreMy friend and I walked in around 6:40 on a Friday evening to a very crowded and bustling restaurant. We did not have reservations and were offered a seat at the bar by the hostess when a server came up and said there was a 2-top available. We opted for the 2-top and waited only a couple minutes while they set the table for us. They did require masks to enter and proof of vaccination prior to being seated. Our server informed us of the nightly special which was chicken & cheese empanadas and also offered a prex fixe menu for Valentine's Day weekend. She also let us know that they were out of the Cuban sandwich and the caramelized baby carrots. My friend ordered the chicken & cheese empanadas to share which was served with a dipping sauce and spring mix. We were also served chips with 3 different salsas. The chips were hot, fresh, and crispy! For drinks, my friend opted for a strawberry daiquiri while I ordered a mango margarita - both of which were tasty and hit the spot after each of us having a very long week! For our main entrees, my friend ordered the chicken enchiladas topped with mole sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole, and sour cream. It was a very generous portion so she had leftovers to take home. I ordered 3 tacos (pictured L to R): crispy shrimp, pineapple & anchiote braised pork shoulder, and short rib. I was only able to eat 2 tacos - the pork followed by the beef - with me bringing the shrimp taco home. Our entire meal was absolutely delicious! We would both highly recommend it and will...
Read moreI will start with the good part, that was our server Emma. She was great! The rest of our experience not so much. I called to make a reservation for the rooftop and was told we could be accommodated at 7:30. At 7:00 I received a text stating “your are expected at Comida in 30 minutes”. We arrived a few minutes early and was told I did not have a reservation. I was surprised because I had spoken with the hostess just a few hours before and was texted by the restaurant. We received numerous “I’m sorry”s and were told to wait at the bar. My 22 year old daughter did not bring a purse and therefore did not have her ID. She was not planning to order anything. When I began to ask the bartender for a margarita, before I could finish my sentence she told me we couldn’t sit at the bar. We were told numerous times that our table would be ready in a few minutes. As we waited and waited and waited, still more sorrys from the hostess. We were finally seated at 8:00, which if we were a walk in and were told it would be a 30 minute wait to sit on the rooftop we would have known that was the case. It took 30 more minutes to receive a our food. Should it really take that long to make a few tacos? Isn’t everything prepped in advance? The menu descriptions sounded delicious but the food itself was uninspiring, dry and lacked flavor. Actually it was pretty on par with Ten Mile House. This was our first and last time visiting Comida. What a...
