Fabulous place for Korean. What I really like about his place (maybe because it is close to Northwestern), is it is very vegetarian friendly. Most Korean places will have very few items; so there is never a choice. Here almost every category of dishes has a vegetarian option. I would stay away from the Ramen here, as it kinda stinks compared to the other stuff. My go to here is SunDobu. It is fantastic. I have had the Bibimbap, the fried rice, the Ramen, (all vegetarian); but the one standout is this. It is Nuclear hot and makes you sweat and makes work after Lunch a little less of a chore.
So for being vegetarian friendly; a salaam from this eater.
Edited to add: Thanks for the response. Two points. I know it is difficult to create a good vegetarian Ramen that has the same flavor as the meat based Ramen. It is HARD to create a umami flavor profile in a vegetarian broth. Secondly, it is only 'bad' compared to the other stuff. When the rest of the vegetarian selections are this good, there is no point in ordering Ramen (which is a Japanese Dish) in a Korean...
Read moreI’ve been to this spot many times over the years. Though it has changed hands and names and internal layout, it’s always been Korean food.
I visited for lunch around 1:45 pm today. I came to satisfy my Bibambap craving, and it was only partially satisfied.
I first sat down at the window seating, and was then told that no one is allowed to sit there. I asked why there were no signs to indicate that and my question was laughed off.
No matter, I was given a menu at the table. I picked and then I needed to go visit the front register to order. Also a bit strange for a place that automatically includes a 15% gratuity to all orders.
I ordered the beef bibambap and it arrived cold and with hamburger. I have since googled and learned this is not out of the ordinary, but it was surprising since it’s always been hot and with bulgogi every other time I’ve ordered it. I guess I should have asked?
It was just ok. Sort of flavorless. It tasted better when I brought home the extras and microwaved it.
I think this place will taste better in my...
Read moreDecent hole-in-the-wall authentic Korean cuisine in downtown Evanston. This was close to the hotel I stayed at and I was craving some hot soup after a long day of meetings. Service was friendly, but I had ordered the Galbitang (beef short rib soup) and they gave me the Gamjatang (spicy pork bone soup) instead. At least it was a delicious mistake so I didn’t ask them to correct it, even though they charged me the higher price of the Galbitang. I was a bit irritated to see they automatically added a 15% tip on the receipt (as a line item like an entree) rather than letting me decide (I generally tip higher), so when you go check out, don’t double tip as there is a separate line to add a tip…again. All in all the food was good and soup was a generous portion to balance the pet peeves I mentioned. Would I go back if I was in the area...
