This place is two stores back-to-back. The bakery is one side and it is home to the best ever Florentine cookies on earth. I also purchased 2 danish which were very fresh but a tad skimpy on the cherry filling and pecans. The second store is the cafe. The menu is limited and many of the dishes seem to have a lot going on in them so if you are in search of something simple, you probably won’t find it. I chose the basic breakfast sandwich. This was an egg “patty” with your choice of bread, meat and cheese. For as amazing as the bakery is, this sandwich was not very good and it was all because of the rubbery egg patty. That being said, the staff on both sides weren’t very friendly and just tolerated the customers. The cafe is a very cute space. Both are very clean And spacious. Definitely worth returning for the bakery but I will pass on the cafe.

I grew up I Evanston, have visited tags bakery many many times and used them for various occasions and celebrations. I have ordered the half smiley cookies for many occasions and they have always been beautiful and delicious. My mom ordered a dozen cookies for a bridal shower this weekend and requested sage green with white initials of the bride and groom. When she got them home and I opened the box I was surprised to find these awful green cookies with messy handwriting looking like an amateur had done them. When I called and spoke to the manager she offered no apology or anything to rectify the situation. She even said that she thought they looked pretty so shows how low their standards have gotten. Clearly new management. I’ll be ordering my cookies elsewhere from now on.

It was our first time needing to order a cake since living in Evanston and we live near Central St so we wanted to support local. It felt like a risk ordering a cake for 50 people without ever having their cake before but it did not disappoint! Everyone wanted to know where we got our cake from. Our party was Sunday so I picked up Saturday since they’re closed Sunday and it stayed perfect. I brought in a picture of a cake I saw online elsewhere and they were able to recreate it perfectly. I will say we got the 14” round for 50 people, but we had quite a bit left over even with just about everyone having a piece.

Yes, Tag’s has been around a long time. But it’s surprising given their lack of customer service. Deplorable. I purchased 9 cut out pumpkin cookies. We had never purchased them before. So I called ahead to inquire about them. When asked if they were a plain sugar cookie with no flavor in either the cookie or icing the staff person said there wasn’t except for the chocolate icing for the face. I also explained that we were looking for plain, only vanilla flavored cookies like other bakeries sell at this time of year. Upon tasting one we discovered it had a strong cinnamon flavor, which is not we were looking for. We purchased most for kids who are fussy about taste. I first spoke with “store manager” Alexandra. She first said it was the same recipe used for all their cut out cookies. I explained that we had never had their cut out cookies and that is why I had called ahead for information. I told her it was an overpowering cinnamon flavor. She went to check with the Baker and returned saying recipe calls for a hint of cinnamon, but that it doesn’t provide a cinnamon flavor. I offered that maybe this was a bad batch that got too much cinnamon in it? After going around and round with her without even an apology, I told her I was getting very irritated and that she could at least offer a credit. I spent $30 on the cookies or not what they told us it would be. She said we don’t do that and continue to go in circles with defending them. I’ve been asked her to have the person she reports to call me and she said there is no one higher. I then said well I guess you just want a very bad review. Then suddenly, she got somebody else on the phone named Dana. Dana was just as bad, if not worse. She went round and round defending the cookies and not even apologizing for the experience. After both of them wasting so much of my time I finally hung up. Maybe they need their managers to go through customer service training because they sure don’t get it. No apologies or a credit for their error. You can make good baked items but being so rude and not caring at all about the experience leaves customers frustrated. There are plenty of other good bakeries with people who care about their customers. Read the other low reviews and you’ll see this is typical. Be careful how much money you spend with them.

Edit** Hi Gretchen,

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I appreciate the time you took to respond and your gracious offer. I picked up the six this past weekend and they were great as always! Everyone enjoyed them! Looking forward to more of them in the future!

Original Post: So, once upon a time I loved coming here because of their custard bismark. Were once my favorite. Now, I can't even get it most of the time! Recently, I had gotten lucky: there were eight! And so I had ordered four of them. BUT as they were bagging them, someone on the phone putting an order asked for seven and my order got limited to one. One! Who does that?! I only got one because it was already in the bag! Why should I get penalized after getting an order in person before the phone caller asked for them?! That's just messed up! Saddened to say this, but they've gone downhill. :(

SO: apparently callers get priority Cons: If you actually get up early and drag yourself over they treat you second to someone...
