Having grown up in Brooklyn and Philadelphia with a father who was an award winning pit master serving wood smoked jerk chicken for over 15 years… after traveling most of the west indies to study the difference in flavor profiles according to the island… after personally serving as a private chef who specializes in Caribbean fare, I approach all varieties of Caribbean restaurants with care. I’m sad to report that the owner of this establishment tried to embarrass me in front of a line of people when I’d only asked to see the oxtail that I was about to pay $28 (+$3 credit card transaction fee) for. I gently asked the young woman working for him to peek at how it was being served and she obliged, only for him to come over and tell me “I didn’t have to order them if I didn’t want to.”
I am very aware of my free will and expressed that I understood. He repeated himself as if to try and turn me away. I stayed. Payed $36 for the oxtail platter and a beef patty and KNEW that the attitude I’d received would be forgotten once I ate the food with my family that was waiting nearby.
Unfortunately I was wrong. I opened up a Styrofoam container to find under soaked beans in our rice that made them too hard for my daughter to eat and rice drenched in gravy with bits of oxtail and bare bones. If I’d weighed the amount of meat I’d just paid for it was less than 4 ounces. We braced ourselves for the beef patty and found a flattened and obviously frozen patty that I could have purchased a whole box of in the grocery store for the money I’d shelled out.
I could rate the whole experience lower but I won’t match the energy that brought me to leave this review in the first place.
Maybe be kinder to first time patrons when they’re exercising their right to know what value they’re paying for in this trying economy. Or be sure your food can make up for your lack of...
Read moreMy parents and I came here for dinner. There weren't a lot of people, so we were seated immediately. My mom ordered jerk pork, she said her meal wasn't exciting. She did note the librarian potato salad was good, but she also said it wasn't West Indian jerk. She said it wasn't jerk at all, more like just roasted pork. She also noted that her jollof rice was hard. My dad and I however had issues with our food. My dad got brown stew chicken. He said there was more skin and fat than meat on his chicken. Not only that, but his chicken came out cold. Not lukewarm, cold. We sent it back. They reheated it, and sent it back. They were very apologetic. He said whoever made his order, can't make stew chicken at all. I ordered on the lighter side. I got a patty with coco bread. My patty was still frozen in the middle. I sent it back. They sent me out a completely new one. Overall, we weren't pleased with our food. I do appreciate them rectifying the cold food. They also offered free dessert because of our issues. But as West Indians, we know how things are supposed to be prepared and served. The dessert we got was rum cake. Never in my West indian life have I ever come across rum cake that was cold, hard, and tasted of nothing but lemon and salt. Where did lemon and salt come from in rum cake? It was not a rum cake at all. Not to mention, my dad got sick after he ate this when we got home. I wish this business nothing but the best, but we...
Read moreStopped by for lunch and tried a couple things from the special. Overall the food was solid and the portions were generous for the price.
I got the jerk chicken tacos which come two per order along with collard greens and green beans. The tacos were a little greasy but really flavorful. The collard greens were too salty for my taste and had a smoky aftertaste that leaned more burnt than barbecue. The green beans were much better mixed with peppers and carrots and nicely seasoned.
I also tried the veggie platter to sample more sides. It comes with four choices instead of an entrée and two so I went for the jollof rice candied yams baked mac and cheese and cornbread. Everything tasted good though the cornbread portion was smaller than expected since it came with one piece instead of three.
All the food was packed in plastic-wrapped to-go containers which made sense since everything was a bit saucy and greasy. Not the easiest to check before leaving but convenient for carrying home.
The inside of the restaurant was very hot and humid probably from the steam tables keeping the food warm. Most dishes are ready up front with a few extras coming from the back. I couldn’t imagine eating there since I was sweating just waiting in line but for takeout it’s...
