Okay... I've been a customer of Hunan Gardens since it's been opened in 1984. In fact, my parents knew the original owners. Raeford Road was a mecca for 3 Chinese restaurants across from one another in those early days. China King, in the corner of Purdue and Raeford Road (which is now the present day Doslinger), David Chin's Golden Dragon (which is now Sammios on Raeford Rd.), and of course Hunan Gardens across the way in Higland Shopping Center. These were real authentic Chinese restaurants in Fayetteville. And they were all great places. Hunan Gardens has changed owners several times, but they kept the same traditional Szechuan and Cantonese dishes in their menus. I love how they make their Chicken Curry with right spice and heat it's supposed to be, their egg rolls are huge and fresh, you can never go wrong either choosing their Egg Foo Young or their Beef and Broccoli. Their combination meals for lunch are excellent for anyone on a budget, but they give you so much that for $9.50-$11.00, for their combo lunches you have enough leftover to eat for the next day. Okay...so then building looks a little disheveled, outside maybe needs some updating as well as the inside decor. But, this place is closest to the most authentic Chinese food that has not been too Americanized for an Americans palette. So, of you want to complain that their fried rice didn't taste right or their egg roll wasn't liked what you had from the another Chinese restaurant you always go to...just remember, this place has history. The chef here knows what he's doing because I've traveled a lot, and this place has been the closest one I've had real, authentic Chinese food. Liked I said earlier... Hunan Gardens might have changed owners, but they kept the same ingredients and cooking style from way back. Don't knock this place down...come in...sit down...enjoy the meal..and stop complaining. Oh, and if you do...tell the owners directly, they're present every time I come in. It's better you tell them in person so they can accommodate you rather than complaining about the dish you compare to a hawker stall you're used to buying " authentic" Chinese food....

From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by a friendly staff who take pride in what they do. There’s a genuine kindness and attentiveness that fills the atmosphere—never rushed, always respectful, and incredibly helpful with menu suggestions if you’re looking to try something new.
Now let’s talk about the food—this is Chinese cuisine done right. The flavors are bold and balanced, and you can immediately tell everything is made with care and authenticity. The sauces never overpower the dish—they complement the ingredients with just the right touch.
The portions are more than generous—this is one of those places where you’ll happily have leftovers, and they’re just as good, if not better, the next day. It’s rare to find a restaurant that consistently hits the mark on flavor and quantity, but Hunan does it effortlessly.
Another standout is the Egg Drop Soup, which is rich, velvety, and comforting, especially on a chilly day. Their House Fried Rice is always perfectly cooked with a delicious mix of meats and vegetables—fluffy, not greasy, and full of flavor.
The restaurant is clean, peaceful, and great for both a quiet dinner or a family outing. Every visit here feels like a treat—and not just for your taste buds, but for your spirit too. You leave full, satisfied, and already planning your next visit.

Read moreI went and I ordered three meals today one for each of my children and one for myself. First off it was packaged incorrectly they put the small container of general tso chicken on the bottom and the bigger packages of chicken wings with fried rice on top. so when I put it on the floor in my car and I was driving it tipped over. So the general tso chicken sauce spilled out into the bag. the container for the fried rice and chicken wings looked just about half empty. My children could not eat it because the chicken was dry and the rice was flavorless. My rice was also flavorless and my broccoli tasted old not just over cooked. So sadly I bought food to not have to cook and still had to cook. I am so disappointed with the food here. Expected a lot more with all the good reviews and awards posted all over. The staff was very kind and attentive. But it was a to-go order after all. I did not have time to go back because I had to go to work at 5. I live 10 mins away. I figured the food would be good because the egg rolls/spring rolls were excellent. At the end of the day that is all that we ate. $24 and all we ate was 3 egg rolls/spring rolls. Please do not say i do not know authentic Chinese food because I used to eat in Chinatown in New York on a...
