UPDATE: I left my original review from a year and a half ago below for reference, and I initially had it as five stars. My family and I just went into the restaurant at the beginning of December and everything was great per usual. When we had it yesterday for takeout, it tasted different.
There was a new seasoning on the pork and some of our favorite sauces (Smoky Mountain, Memphis Belle, Georgia Mustard) had a different taste. Prior to yesterday, I never noticed it. I’m not sure if for the new year they did a revamp of all their food and sauces, but it was honestly disappointing. The sides tasted normal (cold slaw, green beans, baked beans).
Service for pickup was still good as well as in-house service when we went in a month ago, I only removed a star because the original flavors were good as is and didn’t need the update. I imagine some people will probably like the new flavoring, but I think it would be better to have the option to add in the rub/seasoning rather than changing the base meat flavor. I realize some rubs/seasonings need to cook on the meat to get the flavor, so it would be hard to make that possible unless cooking separate batches.
ORIGINAL: My husband and I have only been living here for about two weeks and we’ve picked MISSION for take out almost every time.
The pork is always tender and delicious, and the serving sizes are huge. The baked beans have a more liquid sauce rather than thick, but are still good. To add a little extra tang, I will mix in some of the Georgia Mustard sauce. The green beans are delicious, with an extra kick added. The cornbread is soft and moist.
We’ve tried almost all the sauces, and Smoky Mountain is one of our favorites. You can tell there is an actual smokiness rather than an artificial flavor. Missouri Belle was another favorite, which is sweet and bold.
MISSION is another military style establishment, but unique in its own way. You can see the smokers as you’re waiting for your food. There are different varieties of decor, but the base style of the restaurant is wood paneling. They even have a company military vehicle staged out front, which I assume they use for their catering events.
Staff was extremely nice and accommodating each time we ordered. I have family members with severe gluten allergies, and they took extreme care to avoid contamination. The wait time was not long at all and prior to leaving the restaurant they opened the meal boxes to make sure it was everything we requested.
My husbands family comes from farmers, so I’ve had my fair share of barbecue pork. If I find a better place, I’ll let you know, but MISSION is by far...
Read moreI’ve been coming here for years and have introduced this place to friends and family, but felt very uncomfortable after the experience we had today. My husband, baby and I were trying to find where to sit and the employee who was checking the dining area was behind us so my husband asked where the high chairs were located at. The man walked away to show him where the chairs were at but I found an empty booth and asked my husband to help me get settled down right quick as we were holding 2 trays of food and he was carrying my baby. When I turned around the employee was gone, he was already at the area where the high chairs were at, he turned around and started shaking his head and seemed frustrated that my husband wasn’t behind him. HE WAS HELPING ME CARRY EVERYTHING. Well then the man comes to our table with the high chair and tells my husband “I thought you were following me, I was going to show you where the chairs were at for next time because this is a SELF SERVE restaurant where you grab it yourself” which my husband was going to go grab after we settled down. We were shocked he said this to us as everyone is always friendly and welcoming. After this, he periodically checked on the customers around us and asked if they were doing well and he just ignored us and never bothered asking if we were doing okay. I thought about reporting this to the manager, but I’m not the type of person to make a big deal out of things, instead I won’t be recommending this place to...
Read moreUm. Okay so the best way I can think to say this is due to cultural differences I was not impressed with the food from the meats to the sides. The Mac and cheese was great! The corn bread was great! The brisket was a little dry and kind of had a "crumbly" texture to it def lacked flavor. The pulled pork was not very flavorful at all and I had to season it when I got home . The cole slaw had too much pepper or celery salt which ever one it was. The potato salad was a BIG no but again....cultural differences. The collard greens tasted more like like turnip greens but overall was okay. Fries were standard. They have great sweet tea and lemonade. The atmosphere was good they had music and nice decor. Staff wise/customer service wise ppl just kind of stare at you lol I feel like in business if you look at a customer automatically you need to say hello or wave, smile SOMETHING don't just stare at me. There was a woman cleaning tables and she is the ONLY one that started a Convo asked how I was doing etc. Would I return? Most likely not. I spent almost 70$ for what I felt was 20-30$ flavor. Overall I give them a 2.5 out of 5 specifically because of the corn bread, Mac, and the lemonade/tea. Everything smelled sooooo good when they handed me the food but the taste....that's another story anyways thank you to the woman at the drink station who started a conversation and asked how I was doing etc you my dear...
