I don't like writing bad reviews or criticizing people because it can affect their income and their families. Also, people's mindset changes from day to day even moment to moment. But I felt that what I experienced today was bad enough to write about.
I live in California. My job takes me to places all over the country and I have also traveled throughout Asia and both eastern and western Europe. I am currently contracted to a hospital in Charleston, WV, and although I have been working there since April of this year, this is the first time I spent a weekend here.
Since I am not familiar with the area, I asked some of my co-workers for something to do or somewhere to try over the weekend. Below you will see a recommendation for the Secret Sandwich Society.
After a morning of driving and hiking, I finally made it to the restaurant. The place seemed elegant for a sandwich restaurant, filled with happy people, having drinks, chatting. . . I found an empty place at the bar and ordered a drink. I asked for a dirty vodka martini. I was offered both Tito's vodka and Grey Goose. I refused both and opted for Finlandia (or so I was told). My drink arrived and then I ordered a turkey sandwich (Rose Marie) without red peppers, because I am allergic.
The sandwich did not arrive after 23 minutes. I watched as other people received their meals, but mine was not to be seen. I had a meeting to attend in Charleston so I couldn't delay any longer. My server (Rudy) came by and told me that the sandwich would be at least another 7 minutes. At this time I informed him that I could wait no longer as I had a meeting to attend an hour away. He became indignant and began to make snide comments that I was sketchy from the beginning and that I should just wait for the meal. He brought me the bill for the drink I had, I paid, then I left.
The whole incident left a bad taste in my mouth. I was really looking forward to trying the food at this place as it was highly recommended by several people at St. Francis Hospital. I really didn't like the way I was treated, and I would probably have let it slide until I saw the bill (below).
Table 107, Sketch Dude Allergy. Is this really how this company treats its customers? What exactly was sketchy about me? Is it because I am a person of color? Did it bother you that I didn't want Tito's vodka (which, by the way, the receipt says you served me)? Are people not allowed to have food allergies? And even if I was "sketchy," why should that affect how long it takes to cook my food?
I am sorry but I can not recommend a company that employs such people. Your company really needs to improve it's hiring practices, or at least invest some time in training for better...
Read moreProbably my favorite meal of our vacation to the New River Gorge area!
We came here for dinner last Saturday evening after a long day of exploring. This restaurant is right on the edge of downtown Fayetteville and hosts a spacious patio. They were busy on a Saturday (20-30 minute wait), but the hostess let us know we could sit and eat at the bar if we wished. There was no wait there, and so we did! I'm glad, too -- the bartender and our waitress (Lindsay, if I remember correctly?) was fantastic!
The restaurant is pretty inside and has a modern and chic vibe. I loved it. The menu consists mostly of sandwiches and burgers but there are a lot of options and many of them are quite creative! They also have a good number of craft cocktails and beers.
I was feeling like celebrating, so I asked Lindsay which of their cocktails was on the sweeter side since that is usually my preference. She recommended the BLT (blackberry, lemon, and thyme, mind you) shrub and so I ordered that and she made me one.
Boy, she didn't steer me wrong. One of the better cocktails I've had in a very long time. Sweet, fruity, effervescent, strong but not cloying -- it was fantastic!
For our meals, my parents split the Hoover (fried chicken sandwich), I got the Lady Bird (grilled chicken, bacon, chipotle mayo), and my husband got the Delano (fried fish). Hubs and I got fries while my parents had the house chips.
My only major gripe about this place is our food took a pretty long time to come out. They were quite busy but it was still a little on the excessive side. Oh, and my husband's fish, while tasty, was a very thin and small cut of meat, which was disappointing to him.
When our food did arrive, though, it was delish! I'm partial, but I think I got the best thing -- big, tender, juicy chicken breast, smoky bacon, slightly spicy and generous chipotle mayo, and fresh, crispy fries...it was a winner! My parents, who I could tell were skeptical when I recommended we go here, were also very pleased and devoured their half sandwiches. The house chips were great, too! My husband enjoyed the taste of his sandwich but like I said, was disappointed by the portion (especially compared to my and my parents' sandwiches). He agreed I outbought him. ;)
Overall, I'd give my experience a 4.5 but don't think I quite would round up to a 5 due to the long wait for our orders. Still, I'd absolutely wholeheartedly recommend a visit here while in...
Read moreWe came from Pittsburgh to visit NRG park on Sunday 5/18 and drove thru FV after and decided to stop to eat bc the dogs needed to eat their dinner before the drive home. We stumbled on SSS even though we had saw it online while looking at places before the trip. And we loved the name because our dogs are names Sebi Sadie and Scooter (SSS) :) We hadn't planned on eating out but decided to have a treat. SSS is very nicely designed and comfortable to approach and felt very clean. The host I think was Jason ? or his name started with a J and he allowed me to walk in with my dog to order take out. I did keep my dog in my arms. I told him that I was Vegan and he actually went into the kitchen to check on what was officially Vegan. He said the Fillmore had egg in the eggplant batter which I had asked about so I ordered the Pioneer (only Vegan item) They took my number and said they would text me when ready. I fed my dogs in the car and then my food was ready. It took some time (maybe 20 or more minutes) but it was well worth a little wait. What a treat !!! The plant based burger with vegan cheese and vegan sauce were delicious. (Well, I'm hoping it was all plant based -bread too). The fries were great as well. (I would have loved more pickles because they were amazing and maybe a 1/2 side salad option and 1/2 the amount of fries). They didn't give me ketchup but I didn't want any anyway. I left 1/2 of my fries in the lawn for the critters. I went back in to dispose of my trash and wash my hands and the host was so nice and shook my hand and said thanks. He was actually nice to some folks that showed up late and had to let them know they were closing up for the day. I asked him about FV and he told me to check out some other places and where the main street was. Give this young man a raise ! 5 STARS for SSS and the host. Only things I would change is a few more Vegan options, a dog friendly patio (why I gave 4/5 stars) and a few bucks off the item. If I had a date plus drinks tax and tip it would be over $50.00. for 2 people. I know things have changed with the cost of goods sold but this just seems really high. If SSS was around my way and the sandwiches were priced lower, I'd probably eat there several times a week. Food for thought. But, wanted to say that NRG Park and...
