My wife, two daughters (ages 15 and 10), and I were looking for a Mexican restaurant to try in the Fenton area, as we have felt the food at Three Margaritas has went downhill a little bit in the recent year. We knew about Mi Lupita, but it is kind of tucked back out of the way near old town Fenton, and isn't very appealing from the outside, appearing run down.
We visited the restaurant on a Thursday night (2012-07-26) at 4:30pm. The waiter was friendly, but I would not call the service fantastic. It was adequate at best. There was another gentleman that was walking around as well, and he appeared more pleasant and interacted with the customers in a more frequent manner.
The customary chips and salsa were good. The chips were standard bag fair chips and not made fresh, but the salsa was good and carried a mild kick to it. I wanted to try their pork soft tacos (and off menu item) and a pork tamale, but there wasn't an item as such available. The waiter volunteered that this was a combo option and took that as my order. My wife tried a dish that was some steak in a tomatio sauce and it was very spicy (which she was looking for) and it was served with fresh grilled tortillas. She was very happy with the dish. She also commented that her margarita was strong and tasty, just like she likes it. My pork tacos were very good and the tamale was very tasty as well with plenty of meat in each and the seasoning was perfect. One of my daughters ordered beef tacos, and she was also pleased with those, and my eldest daughter ordered an enchilada dish and she was pleased with hers as well.
It is a little out of the way. It doesn't look like much on the outside. But on the inside it is clean, and surprisingly updated with a nice looking bar. We will be back to try more menu items and recommend you try it too. It looks like a place to get away from the crowds that flock to the other two Mexican restaurants in Fenton (Three Margaritas and Azteca) and the food was better than both, with less crowds.
Enjoy and support...
Read moreProbably the most shocking experience I’ve had in a restaurant. It starts with the very mean old lady serving us the wrong things multiple times, getting our things mixed up , well when we would tell her about it she would just argue and not correct. Then we get our food, ZERO flavor and much smaller portions than normal Mexican restaurants. Then we get our bill..... we ordered a chipotle taco salad- $8.995 on the menu., we were charged for something different that was $11, so I ask for a menu to make sure I wasn’t wrong and yes the said $8.95 so I let that lady know, she got very mad and told us no, we didn’t order that, well let me tell we literally get the same thing every time we go to any Mexican restaurant so I definitely didn’t tell her something different. She wouldn’t correct it, she just kept saying you ate it, you oat that price. Well this was my first time at this restaurant so I didn’t know they gave me a different taco salad that cost more, I just thought theirs was different and she has already gotten so many things wrong, I just ate it but not knowing it was $3 more . She kept arguing so I just told her I wasn’t paying the extra $3, she literally turned around and yelled “call the cops”! Yeah I’m not kidding! So I just told her go ahead I’ll pay the bill but not the $3 ! And sure enough 3 police officers showed up at our table ! They had her to remove the $3 charge to our bill, but can you imagine??? Embarrassed our party over a $3 mistake she made and have that drama in restaurant! We eat Mexican like once a week but never here again! Even their chips and salsa was terrible! The milni lupita up it’s on manchester which they own is a much better experience they should get rid of the...
Read moreMi Lupita has what so many area Mexican restaurants don't. "Individuality". The menu is huge and has a lot of variety, with more authentic dishes than any other St. Louis Mexican restaurants at this price, and still more variety and authenticity than the expensive hipster joints. The recipes are also primarily directly from the owners mother and her region of Mexico (sorry, I forget the name).
Everything I've had here was just delicious. Their chips are fresh and hot, the salsa is homemade and full of flavor... and they usually have an outstanding peanut and habanero hot sauce that will kick your butt. I am especially partial to the egg, nopales, potato and chorizo based dishes that are unique to Mi Lupita
The only reason for a detracted star is the sometimes slow service. That's actually a result of "keeping it small" and "keeping it family". The owners are most often right there, waiting tables, bartending, ringing up tickets... and chatting with all the customers. You quickly become a friend around there and I, for one, appreciate the casual and human treatment. Sometimes that comes at the expense of slow service or a little mistake... which can be a detraction for sure. But, it has never kept me from coming back, only taking a moment to decide if I am going during a busy time/day and whether I can afford the...
