Lady at the counter was very friendly. Friendly smile with a welcoming tone of voice. Atmosphere was perfect for a family bbq spot. Rustic decor to go along with their log cabin exterior aesthetic.
Let’s get to the food. I’ll start with what I liked. Flavor was excellent with everything! I got a BBQ Rib meal that came with coleslaw and beans with a cornbread muffin as well as a pound of brisket. Beans were fantastic. Tasted a good bit of seasoning in them that makes me think of it more as a chili than baked beans. I put a couple dabs of their bbq sauce in them and that was just right for me. On the subject of sauce, it was a sweet sticky sauce with a slight tang to it and a little peppery spice on the back end. It was kind of in between a Kansas City style sauce and a Memphis style on both flavor and texture, I very much enjoyed it. Cole slaw was just how I like it. Long stringy cabbage not that finely grated stuff and it was a little sweet.
Now that niceties are out of the way, I’ll get to the rest. Other reviews mentioned how great the cornbread muffin was. I wasn’t impressed. It was very tasty but also very dry. I had to load it up with butter and wash it down with some tea to get it down. The ribs were pretty dry on the outside. Didn’t seem to have any glaze on them, just sauce poured over after plating. This is usually fine with me, if it’s nice and moist but these weren’t. However, gotta give them props, they came off the bone cleanly and were quite moist on the inside and as with everything today, they had good flavor. The brisket was very disappointing. I’m not 100% sure what they’ve got going on in the kitchen so this is just a guess. But it seems to me like they slice the brisket before storing it. The individual slices were dry all the way around and had a brownish color to them that makes me think it was exposed to the heat of the warmer from the inside, which wouldn’t be possible if it were left whole. Some of the fatty slices from the point were tender and still a little moist, but most of the place was tough and dry. If they were to leave it a whole brisket in the warmer and slice it to order, it would maintain the moisture and tenderness. The flavor was there but the texture just wasn’t it.
Overall a fair spot. If you’re familiar with any real southern bbq you probably won’t like this one, but give them a try and form your own opinion! I may have caught them on a bad day.
