Downtown Pizza used to be a weekly tradition on Friday or Saturday night. I love spaghetti with meatsauce, and even though every restaurant makes it differently, I've never had a meal I didn't enjoy. Downtown Pizza was local to me, and they offered a full tin of spaghetti, a side salad, and garlic rolls for around $11. But it seemed that every time they got a new cook, their spaghetti sauce recipe changed. In addition, depending on who was dishing it out, sometimes I would get a full tin of noodles with a little bit of sauce splashed on top, and other times I'd get a little bit of noodles swimming in a tub of sauce.
I moved away from the local area about 9 years ago, so haven't been to Downtown in a while, but tonight I had a craving. I was happily surprised to see that their full tin of spaghetti with meatsauce, side salad with dressing, and garlic rolls were still only $11, and I placed my order and paid online.
As is often the case, what distinguishes a good restaurant from a not so good restaurant is often not the food, but the service. Although I found the sauce to be extraordinarily sweet and not to my taste, the noodles were nicely cooked and the garlic rolls were not too dry or not soaking in oil. But there was no salad.
I wasn't about to drive all the way back for a side salad, and I wouldn't ask them to deliver it to me. I know that these things sometimes happen and since it was Saturday night, had they been really busy I would've forgotten about it. But they weren't busy. When I picked up my order, I was the only customer in the restaurant, and their two employees were standing behind the counter looking at their cellphones. So, yes, I was a little upset. I called to complain, hoping to be a reminder for them to be a little more careful in the future. I was told they were out of salad! An italian restaurant running out of house salads at 7:30 on a Saturday night?!?!? That's like KFC running out of chicken! Again, I wasn't looking for any kind of discount or refund -- and didn't get one -- but maybe an apology would've been nice. Yes, I ordered it online so they had no opportunity to inform me they had run out of lettuce, but they could've mentioned it when I picked it up! They could've offered me a free coke or a bag of chips in place of the salad. They could've handed me a buck and we would've called it even. For me, eating out is a treat, and this felt more...
Read moreMy roommate and I work late. We got off this evening after the kitchen closed so we had no choice but to order from a place opened late to serve us dinner. We decided to share a burger and get chili on the side bc the food from here, as learned from past experiences, is dry and unflavorful. Not only did they fail to give us what we ordered but "D" was extremely rude when we called to ask about it. We never recieved our chilI or ginger ale that we ordered. Her response verbatim was " we are not sending out our driver for a dollar!".... The tone in her voice was irrational, aggressive, and inappropriate... She continued..."we ran out of chili so idk what to tell you". According to her it's not their policy to inform customers when they run out of things and in her mind it was apparent that she thought we were ridiculous for calling about it. We both work in the food and restaurant industry and were baffled by her abrasive response. I understand you get busy and it may have been grub hubs responsibility to inform us about the lack of options on the menu but after calling grub hub beforehand and being told to call downtown pizza the response we got was completely unprofessional and uncalled for. We were very nice and understanding over the phone but after second thought, the reality of the situation is that we paid for something we didn't get, tipped well, asked nicely and were treated poorly. Do not support this business. We've been disappointed by the quality of food many times in the past and ordered out of desperation and hunger only to get disrespected and cheated out of our hard earned money. Even if is was a "dollar" which was actually 5 with the chili situation, it's just not right. I don't care how rude customers can be in this industry I always paint on a smile and try my best to make them leave happy. We were not rude and tipped way to much to be treated this way,...
