The new Mister 01 location in West Boca Raton, situated in the Mission Bay shopping Plaza, has recently opened its doors. This is the second location of the chain in Boca Raton, with the first being on Federal Highway/US-1. Originally from Miami, the chain is renowned for its unique pizza that features a very thin crust and crust points stuffed with ricotta cheese and resembles a star shape when served. I had never been to any of their locations before, and this was my first experience with the local chain.
There is a lot of hype surrounding this place, and I believe that its location is ideal for success. The restaurant boasts an attractive modern appearance with high ceilings and abundant natural light. The menu is concise, featuring pizzas, salads, and a select few antipasto dishes.
The pizza dough is said to be fermented for a duration of 72 to 96 hours. However, it is unclear which type of flour they are using - whether it is Italian 00/Caputo or regular bread flour. Their ovens are of the steel deck type, and it is likely that they are gas (or possibly electric). The temperature at which they run the oven is not higher than 600 to 650 degrees. Therefore, the pizzas do not get a high level of crust char, nor does the oven itself add any flavor to the pizza.
The service is excellent and efficient. Water service comes in a carafe, but I thought it was amusing that they were using plastic cups.
I began with a Caesar salad, which cost me $11. The portion size was quite generous and could easily satisfy two people. If you order it with some protein on top ($4), it's an excellent value for a single diner. The menu offers both pre-configured salads and options to build your own. I wouldn't hesitate to try any of them, or customize one based on my preferences.
My only complaint is that the salad is not tossed in the kitchen or at the table, which could lead to a messy experience. To avoid this, I would recommend requesting the server to toss it for you. The salad itself was delicious, with big shavings of Parmesan cheese and a tasty dressing. The croutons, made from rosemary focaccia served with the burrata cheese appetizers, were fresh and crunchy. The salad was made with chopped Romaine hearts.
This was my first time ordering the signature pizza, the Star Luca, which features spicy Calabrese sausage (salami) mozzarella, basil, and ricotta stuffed crust points. It’s a very thin crust, but I thought it was under-seasoned and a bit dried out. I tasted a bit of the fermentation, but there was not a lot of salt, olive oil, or anything else that would give the crust additional flavor. Additionally, I did not feel the sauce imparted much flavor (I thought it was very light on the sauce), but the spicy sausage overpowered it so it was hard to tell.
They bring spicy olive oil and chile flakes to the table, which I feel is unnecessary on this particular pie. In the thin crust/spicy pie category, I actually prefer how the far more blue-collar (and chain) Riko’s in Pompano Beach makes its bar pie pizzas.
I don’t think this is a one-and-done place for me; I would return for the salads and maybe one of the more basic-style pizzas. You can get one of the regular ones for about $17 (the “Extraordinary” 13” ones are $20), and a small regular pie is $8-$9, so you can get one of those with a salad and walk out cheaper and if you wanted to eat lighter.
Regarding pizza artistry, I feel that Scuola Vecchia, in Parkland, performs much better than Mister 01 at the same price point, making legit certified Neapolitan pies in an authentic 900+ degree wood-burning oven from Italy, and using Caputo 00 flour, not whatever nouveau style this Mister 01 pie is supposed to be. Also, Coral Springs’ Livello, which uses the same $20,000 Acunto oven as Scuola Vecchia but is being run at a lower temperature, is also making better pizzas than this place, in my opinion.
So, is the hype a considerable aspect of this place? Absolutely. Would I return? Also, yes, but not...

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. We’ve been loyal customers for years—even before this Boca Raton location opened, we frequently dined at their Mizner Park branch. Once this location opened, we started coming here regularly since it’s closer to our home.
Tonight, my wife suggested we go there for dinner. I was out, so I said I’d meet her at the restaurant. We were on a tight schedule because our son had a high school band performance to attend right after, so I arrived early to get a table and place our orders ahead of time to save time.
I politely told the hostess we were a party of four and asked to be seated. She asked if everyone was present. I explained that my wife and kids were on their way and would be there in 5 minutes, and I just wanted to be seated so I could place our orders and save time.
Shockingly, she refused to seat me and insisted that she had to ask the manager. For something so simple, this was ridiculous. When the manager came, I calmly explained the situation again. He, too, refused, citing an unwritten “policy” that everyone in the party must be present before seating.
I asked to see this policy in writing—they admitted it was not written anywhere. Yet they still refused to seat me and instead put me on a waitlist. Just a few minutes later, my wife arrived as I had said she would. I pointed this out to the staff, but the damage was done.
As we were finally being seated, a man—who I later learned works at Grieco—stood up from his table and aggressively inserted himself into the situation. With two young children next to him, he attempted to provoke me, using hostile language and even walking toward me as if to start a fight. Despite trying to defuse the situation and telling him to return to his seat, he kept going. His behavior was disgusting and entirely unprovoked.
I managed to keep my composure and sat down with my family, trying to ignore him. But by then, we had no appetite left. We didn’t even get to eat—just left and went straight to our son’s school event.
This entire ordeal was caused by a combination of poor judgment, inflated egos, and a complete lack of professionalism from both the hostess and the so-called manager who failed to manage the situation properly.
We will never return to this restaurant again unless they overhaul their staff and start hiring people who understand customer service.
And as for the man in the Grieco Chevrolet shirt: I will be reporting him to his company as well. It is beyond unacceptable for someone representing a brand to act so rudely and aggressively in public. He is a disgrace...
Read moreWe happened upon this place as we were leaving Fresh Market. We thought, a quick pizza and salad before we head home would be ideal. So glad that we walked into Mister O1. We were immediately greeted and seated. We were given options for our seating and chose outside. Our delightful server, Rickey, quickly hurried over asking us if we wanted something to drink and let us know we were just 5 minutes under the wire for Happy Hour. My hubs got the blonde ale and I decided on a Diet Coke. Rickey asked if it was our first time there, which it was and let us know about their well known special, The Star Pizza.
We perused the menu and landed on the Laura salad which had burrata cheese, diced tomatoes, fresh parmesan, romaine lettuce, and garlic parm croutons. We were brought the house special olive oil and balsamic and the feast began. The salad is ample and meant for sharing. As a starter, 4 could have probably eaten from this salad or, you can add chicken and it would have been a great dinner for one. Everything was fresh and this was a great start to our meal.
We ordered a start pizza. Half Luca (we subbed pepperoni for the hot salami) and Half Luna (white pizza). What makes the Star pizza so special is that the ends are stuffed with ricotta and it’s like the crust is a mini calzone. The pizza’s are thin crust so If you are looking for Chicago style or pizza chain pizza, this is not the places for you. With that said, don’t think it’s not ample food or that it won’t fill you up. One salad and one pizza for two and we had left overs. Our bill with a 20% tip was $65 and that was cheap considering the quality of the food, the amount, and, of course, the amazing service from Rickey.
They have quite a few locations and I will happily try them all as I find myself in the area.
This little spot is quaint and cozy with indoor and outdoor seating. My one nitpick is that the tables for two are super small. There was no way we could have had the pizza and the salad on the table in the center to share. But listen, if that’s the only nitpick, so be it. This place was amazing and we will be back again and...
