Delicious!
I and a family member went to Moru twice in one week it was so unexpectedly good!
We were able to get a table without a reservation even though it was during the holiday period. The moment we entered we were welcomed.
Ambience (4/5): Very professional staff and very courteous. The decor is modern, cool, and relaxed. Dim lighting, availability of booths, and large windows peering outside. You can see people enjoying their food from the outside and people watch from the inside. Also clean bathroom!
Service (3.75/5): The first time, service was excellent and friendly! The second time service was friendly but maybe a little passive aggressive? The server wasn't as helpful in answering our questions. However, we arrived an hour before closing time. If you're going to seat people close to closing then do that and serve them but if you don't want people coming in that close to closing, maybe push last call to earlier? The first time, they brought us chilli oil with our food. The second time they said they didn't have it and never did but it seemed like they weren't trying. Not a fan of inconsistency in service.
Food (5/5): Amazing! Delicious. Dishes we tried:
Crab cream croquet: Get this appetizer. It will change your life. That is all
Potato salad: it was pleasant to eat, super cold and the presence of subtle flavors made it an interesting eating experience.
Sushi set/premium sushi set: Fantastic quality sushi. I had unagi for the first time. The texture of unagi is offputting to me but I can acknowledge that it was delicious. The key difference between the sushi and premium sushi set is the presence of unagi. The second time I went, we had to figure that out for ourselves because the waiter wasn't helpful in that regard. I highly recommend trying either sushi set. It's worth it.
Bulgogi cream udon: Flavorful and comforting to eat. If they decide to have chili oil, I recommend adding it (if you are a fan of spice). I and my family member split this dish.
In spite of weird service the second time around, I believe the food at Moru is well worth at least a one time experience....
Read moreIt's I think I have found my new real sushi spot. Real sushi restaurants are hard to come by in Jersey. Most are fushi (aka rolls smothered in various sauces). But MORU is the real deal. Hubby and I stopped in for lunch on a Thursday at around 1:30.
I already knew I wanted to get some oysters, so I was really happy to find out that they happened to be on a happy hour special. It's $2/oyster Mon-Fri from 11:30 AM to 6 PM, so we ordered a dozen of those. The oysters are a nice size and came with this nice chili garlic oil. I probably could have eaten two dozen of these on my own. We ended up ordering another half a dozen but some of those were not shucked properly.
For the main, they have lunch sets so we each did the premium sushi set, which is 9 pcs of premium sushi, cabbage salad, and a mini udon. The cabbage salad came with a sesame dressing I did not care for so see if you can ask for this on the side. The udon was a nice addition to the meal, especially on a cool day. We opted for the three additional pieces for $9, which wasn't worth it. It was tuna, salmon, and shrimp. The tuna and salmon were good but the shrimp was one of those cooked shrimp pieces that are usually used as filler pieces. I can't remember what all of the premium pieces were, but I can honestly say there was not one piece I did not like. Usually, there's one or two that are super fishy, but that wasn't the case here - even the piece with the silver skin on it! My favorite was definitely the scallop, uni, and toro. We also ordered a set of handrolls to share. We picked uni, negi toro, scallop, and salmon/ikura. All of them were great.
It seemed that a lot of people were ordering the seiro-mushi set, so I'll have to try that next time I dine in. I've also ordered takeout a few times (the premium sushi set again) and it holds up, even after eating it an hour or two later. My only complaint is that you can only order appetizers or sets for takeout. So if you wanted to order anything a la carte, like handrolls or sushi pieces, that's not available. Hopefully they change that...
Read moreJulia is the greatest and best employee- I have never been met with such genuine empathy, care, service, and sacrifice like Julia did for me. She needs a raise- a placard, a certificate of distinguishment because employees like her; people like her are hard to find SO RARE these days.
I ordered through UberEats after being delayed and starving at the airport for 6 hours and when my UberEats bundled delivery arrived- the driver basically never picked up my food and told me to get a refund. I was completely dumfounded and moreso because he lied to Uber saying Moru was closed (when they were not) making it difficult for me to get a refund of the order.
BUT JULIA. Julia immediately called me she was ON IT about my order being marked as delivered even though no one came to pick it up and was apologizing and being empathetic because i received my UberEats order late anyways and how I must be starving and waiting for my food even though she had no idea about the whole ordeal I had with my 6 hour delayed flight.
Julia was giving me options to get my food back to me and how I could get a refund on UberEats and by this point Moru was closed but Julia closed up but stayed behind to hand my order to a package pickup Uber driver.
Julia..i love you so bad thank you so much you have all my love and prayers I wish I could give you a fat tip or a scholarship or something. The experience with staff can really make or break the whole place as a whole- and the kind of dedication and service Julia embodied so kindly and so empathetically is rare and deserves to be recognized. Food was mid (Gopchang 덮바) but I will indefinitely think of Moru, recommend Moru, and come back to Moru just because of Julia.
Thank you so much,...
