Today, we discovered Greater's "low glycemic" ice cream with 50% less sugar and 25% less fat. For a long, long time, I would pull through every couple of years to ask, "Do you have any low sugar flavors?" Eventually, I gave up asking. Driving by today, curiosity struck, and I finally got the answer I wanted, "Why, yes sir, WE DO!" No Blackberry Chip... No Chocolate Chocolate Chip... However, the Butter Pecan and the Mint Chocolate Chip were... Well, if you have ever enjoyed Greater's ice cream, I don't need to describe it. If you HAVE NOT eaten Greater's, I'm afraid there is no way to describe it. Their product is so superior that words fail.
My wife enjoyed a dish of Butter Pecan, and she gave me a bite. Oh, my. From other makers, this flavor is just pecans in vanilla ice cream. This had plenty of pecans, but the ice cream WAS BUTTERY!
My dish was Mint Chocolate Chip. Hah! Greater's "chocolate chips" are semi-sweet. Their size and shape is like no "chip." Much more like a cheese curl. I held a big one in my mouth... Nothing right away. Then, it began to melt. The melted chocolate moved through my mouth. When it found it's way beneath my tongue, toward the back, BOOM! Chocolate explosion.
There's also a" Vanilla Bean" offering that we'll have to return to sample. No doubt, it will bring tears to any connoisseur.
Nov 16, 2019 update:
Graeter's no longer offers their low-glycemic ice creams. "Nobody bought them" was the explanation. "NOBODY SOLD THEM" is my response. When we originally discovered the great product, we did not find it on a menu or a poster. We saw NO PROMOTION. We learned of this product, acceptable to us as diabetics, only because WE ASKED. Evidently, not enough potential customers asked. They just didn't press hard enough. Darn those low energy customers!
This does not mean that there was no market. "If you build it, they will come," works only in the movies. Next time you launch a superior new product, with lots of recipe research evident like this, appealing to a specific group of customers who (for medical reasons) SHOULD NOT BUY your other products... should not even be Graeter's customers without the product, do your owners a favor: give it a chance. List it prominently on the menu. Print a poster. Blow up a balloon. Offer an introductory special. Do SOME promotion, for goodness sake.
I can hear it now, "Oh, we tried that already. Nobody wanted it." Graeter's,...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing! Though a bit pricey, the flavor, texture, and experience are worth every cent. My most recent venture here was to celebrate my graduation baccalaureate. Service: Everytime I've gone, the workers have been uber polite and genial. They take food allergies very seriously and will take every precaution if you have one. The store itself is kept clean and tidy and has a homey, family feel. Hand-dipped ice cream: Nothing beats their famous ice cream in a waffle cone. The Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip is by far the most popular flavor, with sweet blackberry and huge chips. The Cookie Dough Chocolate Chip has tons of tasty dough bites and chips spread throughout (one of my all-time favorites). The Dark Chocolate Fudge Brownie's brownie bites are soft and chewy for a rich chocolate taste. The Maple Cinnamon Crunch is great as well; you can definitely taste the cinnamon in the shortbread cookie pieces, though I wish the maple was a tad stronger. Cakes and Pies: I've only tried the Black Raspberry Chip Pie. The chocolate crumb crust wonderfully matches the creamy whipped topping and sweet chocolate sauce, making the already-perfect black raspberry ice cream...
Read moreBeing from Cincinnati there's an obligation to eat Greater's ice cream. With Cincinnati chili, there's a choice: Skyline or Goldstar. Not so with ice cream; it's Greater's or it's nothing. Sure, you can argue that it's overpriced in the same way that buying a $200 pair of Bose headphones isn't going to give you sound quality that is 1000% better than a $20 pair of Sony's, but you're from Cincinnati, not Cleveland or Pittsburgh, and it's a comfortable afternoon in the summer and you just took the family out to eat at Chili's, but ordered the burger instead of a steak, so you've got a little bit of extra cash, and the kids want something sweet but you didn't get dessert because deep down you're a practical Midwesterner, and your wife seems OK with stopping and probably has a gift card somewhere in her purse if she can find it, and Greater's is on the way home, and at this moment your family is generally content and you want to keep that going while you can. But going anywhere else is like cheering for the Cubs or the Steelers and you skipped church this week so you don't want anything else hanging on your conscience, so...
