Craving a late night sweet treat, I looked up local ice cream establishments and decided to give this place a try. At the time I felt ambivalent about my experience here, but the more I reflect on it the more disappointing it becomes.
Upon walking in, my pal and I were struck by how loud and echoey the shop is. The decorations are also extremely bland, mostly simple black-and-white images, as well as a cringey quote about how diets are made to be broken. With a name like Sweet Monster, one would expect such a place to have more vibrant, colorful, and creative decorations. Where's the giant mural of a monster or group of monsters delighting in delicious rolled ice cream? Or if not a mural, a framed painting copy that can easily be replicated at other branches (I'm unsure if this restaurant is a chain, but it gave off heavy chain vibes). The employees seemed cheerless, which is no surprise in a place with such a lackluster atmosphere and what I imagine pays in pennies; I also overheard two of them mention how with the AC on in the summer, it gets too cold, but turning it off makes the shop too hot.
As for the ice cream: being a coldstone-style ice cream shop, there's a greater variety of available mix-ins, but the overall flavor lacks depth and richness. I got a triple chocolate cake, and as my pal described it, it tasted like milk and the cake that got mixed in, and that was about it. Very disappointing. I also wonder if rolling the ice cream (a baffling trend in my opinion) also contributed to the loss of a dynamic flavor.
Overall I would recommend finding an alternative ice cream parlor. Sweet Monster Ice Cream is an extreme disappointment, and did nothing to satisfy my craving for a...
Read moreWow, my initial review for this place was seriously lacking. I am glad I got the chance to get back. Let's begin with the fact that right in the middle of the menu for ice-cream and shakes there is a section for...wait for it...CHICKEN WINGS from Seoul Chicken! Are you kidding me? We were so confused that we HAD to order some. I mean what does this mean?!? Wings at an ice-cream place. Let me tell you that they were some of the best wings we have ever encountered. We ordered 12 of the Gangnam Style wings and they were amazing. The wings themselves were good-sized, meaty wings and the breading/fried-ness was immaculate. THIS ALONE might bring me back to try the other kind of wings available (Seoul Sassy). SO, onto the Ice-cream. The treats here are very well done. The ice-cream and add-ins are very flavorful and created expertly. Let's face it though you are paying a premium for all of the labor that they go through to prepare your dish. Not only are you paying the price in the cost of the dish but you are paying the price in the time it takes to make each one. If you have more than a couple orders or if it is busy, you will be waiting a while. There was only 1 person working when we visited and bless her heart she did a fantastic job. Overall, I would say this place has really good ice-cream creations and great-tasting ice-cream. If you are looking for a unique ice-cream dish this is your place. Be aware that that the seating atmosphere is dismal. There are a few cheap outdoor-style tables with backless stools to sit around. Seating for maybe 20 in the small space. Good luck enjoying your ice-cream if the place is packed and there is a long line. Maybe plan to eat it in the back of...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I had the opportunity to try out the latest ice cream boutique to come to Fort Wayne, prior to their official grand opening. We had been looking forward to it, since the quality of other "new" places in Fort Wayne has been fairly high. Unfortunately we did not think the ice cream was that good.
The store itself looks decent, there's a little bit of seating and plenty of standing room, which is needed, but there's no signage indicating how anything works. This can be confusing when you come in for the first time, you have to order at the furthest end of the counter, then stand at the front of the store while you wait, or find a seat if one is available.
The ice cream process itself is fairly "unique", the ice cream is created fresh on an anti-griddle. You see them pour the liquid on, add in any toppings that get mixed in with the ice cream. They chop it all together and smear it around until it freezes on the griddle. Then they roll up the freshly made ice cream, put it in a bowl, and send it over to their finish station. Unfortunately, there are only 4 anti-griddles, and if they are packed with large orders it takes a long time to get your ice cream.
The ice cream, once you get past the novelty of seeing it created, does not stand out on its own. The flavor isn't particularly amazing and it is very reliant on the extra toppings and presentation to "wow" you.
At the end of the day, you can find more flavorful and simpler ice cream options in Fort Wayne that give you more for your...
