My wife and I have been to this place several times. Alas, no more. We were sadly disappointed. The restaurant had an acceptable, if slightly dim atmosphere - lighting was a little restrained but it was adequate to pore over the menus. But it all started to go a bit wrong when our first dish was given to us - or should say 'discarded towards us'. The waitress seemed to sling the salad onto our table as she walked past us holding something else or on a mission somewhere - not quite sure as it was all a bit sudden really - it slid across the table like an animated lettuce-strewn discus. Ok - not really a problem, just odd. It was the sushi. That was really quite nasty. I mean really nasty. Rather than bore you with a cluster of similes and analogies I will simply list the issues, in no particular order of dislike... The tempura batter on the avocado - although crispy was fried in old oil. Sorry - but it tasted like the batter you get around corn dogs towards the end of the evening at a county fair. The soft shelled crabs too had lost their lives and indeed their tasty legacy encapsulated in the same batter. The spinach in my wife's sushi had a most remarkably nauseating taste and texture. We love our greens but this actually made my wife gag and discard forcibly from her mouth. I tasted it with more caution and found it slimy, protoplasmic, stringy and ill seasoned. For me, the coup de gras was the retrieval of a short, curly, light brown hair from within one of my sushi rolls at which point they were left discarded. Then we have the matter of the seaweed wrap itself. Chewy, thick and unpleasant it was redolent of some surgical dressing used for swathing deep skin burns. This meant that the act of actually biting into it meant it stretched and discarded the embalmed contents messily onto my lap and plate. I am not the neatest of eaters but this meal really showed me up to be a person who really should use a pelican bib in public. So, when we asked for the bill we pointed these matters out to our waitress who, of course, apologised profusely and fetched us a bill of $58 with no reduction even though we had left nearly half of our sushi behind and refused a doggy bag for it, because I do not think I could offer it to a dog. A great pity. We've eaten there several times - I know this was a bad one-off, but I think we cannot patronise the restaurant again. We left without tipping. That was a first for...
Read moreWhat used to be a great restaurant has now gone down hill tremendously. Stopped in at 7 pm today & got immediately seated. Our server who was an older Asian female, came to our table & rudely said, “What you want to drink?”, no hello or anything. To which we ordered what we’d like. We initially came to eat some basic sushi rolls such as a California roll or a spicy tuna because it’s a favorite amongst our group. We planned to order those when our server returned to loudly announce, “Sushi rolls are 45-1 hour wait now. Nothing I can do, the chefs are not here, I cannot do anything about it, I cannot control the kitchen, my boss not here.” No exaggeration when she loudly stated that to our table. In every instance, if the wait is long for the food, we’d understand. But the way she addressed it as well as her attitude was very dissatisfying. She immediately told us, “What you want to eat then?” while tapping her pen on her server pad clearly indicating that she was impatient & rushing us. One of our table guest asked kindly if we they could order the steak fried rice, to which she responded rudely again, “No fried rice for dinner, we no do that.” Our table guest instead just ordered a side of steak teriyaki with white rice. Our table also ordered a seaweed salad as well. Our server stormed off & briefly returned with a big plate with less than an ounce of seaweed salad which costs over $6. Already we knew the service was going to continue to worsen. We got all of our food, which was plated horrendously with an odorous scent lingering on the food. Despite that, we still ate our meal. Towards the end of the meal, we kindly asked for a to-go cup for our drinks. Our server responded, “No to-go cups, we don’t have it.” Then she walked away from the table, to return with a kids to-go cup only to state, “I give you this cup, don’t tell my boss, I will get in trouble. Take this cup now.” If the server was kind, this review would’ve been different. But due to her lack of server etiquette, she came across so rudely. We understood it was busy, she could’ve told us the situation & we would’ve understood with compassion. But we’ve been here on numerous occasions for over 20+ years & unfortunately today was...
Read moreThis used to be my boyfriend and I's favorite sushi bar before the corona virus shut it down for a bit. When they were reopened, we got a group of friends together and went there to hang out. We'd been talking about how much we missed this place for months. The food always tasted fresh, everything was beautiful and perfect. Never once had a complaint.
I don't know what happened that day, but everything tasted awful. Half of one of our fried sushi rolls was hollow; just rice and seaweed. The rolls were wrapped super poorly and fell apart when we tried to pick them up with chopsticks. Huge globs of wasabi were packed into every piece, even rolls that weren't supposed to have wasabi. We made a complaint to the waiter. She apologized and went back to reprimand the chef. We heard yelling. The waitress then avoided us for the rest of the night. Didn't offer to fix anything, nothing. When she brought us the check she avoided eye contact and ran off before we could get in a word. We paid and left, all still hungry even after paying a tab of almost $75 because our food was awful and we didn't eat it.
We went back again today hoping for better. Boy were we disappointed. Rule number one with sushi: If it smells like fish throw it away. When we open the takeout box it reeked from halfway across the room. It was again wrapped incredibly poorly and fell apart when we tried to pick it up. Our Oni Maki, which we purchase regularly, tasted like fried cream cheese and nothing else. Nothing tastes the way it's supposed to, the food is ugly, and apparently they can't even do us the decency of using fish that isn't about ready to turn. We won't be going back. RIP Asakusa.
EDIT: It gave me food poisoning. We called them to inform them of this and the operator...
