I’m not sure what was going on the day we visited, but I left disappointed. I should mention, I’m from South Louisiana. Born and raised Cajun, my whole family is. I try not to hold Cajun restaurants to some impossible standard of my home cooking or what I grew up with, but this wasn’t 4.5-star food. The service fell short too.
The place was dead. Maybe two other customers in the whole building, which felt odd right off the bat. Still took nearly 10 minutes to get a water refill, and I had to flag down the bartender, who was elbows-on-the-counter, deep in conversation with a customer.
Here’s what we ordered and how it stacked up:
My Plate: Blackened Redfish with Dirty Rice and Fried Okra The okra? Underdone, no real crisp to it. I like mine where it’s flirting with being crunchy. The fish didn’t look or taste blackened. For $27, the filet was thin, dry, and overcooked. Not sure how they managed to overcook fish without getting the outside blackened right, but here we are. I will say their house seasoning had good flavor when I added it. The dirty rice came with thick-cut sausage, but it wasn’t browned properly. The rice itself was decent, but for the price, there are far better options in the Fort Worth area.
My Daughter’s Red Beans & Rice Same story with the sausage. No browning, no sear, which makes a difference. The whole dish leaned more toward soup than a proper pot of red beans. I’d bet good money they aren’t using high-quality red beans either. Any Cajun worth their salt knows Carnation is the standard. There were many light / pink colored beans in the dish. The flavor was mild and underwhelming.
My Partner’s Fried Shrimp Poboy The shrimp portion didn’t match the size of the Gambino’s bread they brag about. Shrimp were either overcooked and or fried in oil that needed changing. Either way, it missed the mark.
Appetizers:
Boudin Stuffed Texas Twinkies - Filling was solid, bacon was crisp, but the jalapeño inside was basically raw. Threw the whole bite off.
Boudin Dip - Honestly, the best thing we had. Good flavor, stiff and cold, serving it with stiff corn chips was a bad call? Chips kept breaking trying to scoop it out. A plate of French bread would’ve made way more sense.
All said, I wanted this place to be worth the drive and the money. It wasn’t. We’ll stick to our regular haunts unless we happen to be nearby and feel generous enough to give it another shot. With only three customers in the place, there shouldn’t have been this many quality issues. Makes me think the recipes themselves might be where the problem starts.
One bright spot, if you want to bring home some boudin, they do sell Best Stop from Scott, which folks love. But next time I want good Cajun food, I’ll be cooking it myself or heading to...
Read moreWe went Sunday February 22nd around 1130am. Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience. Service was horrible and the crawfish were disgusting. We got the cajun sampler to start. Most of it was ok, but we were missing one of the three hush puppies. Side note.. your picture for this appetizer shows at least a dozen hush puppies.. a litte bit of misrepresentation if you ask me. We ordered 5 lbs of crawfish, which surprisingly came out fast. We also ordered a jambalaya and never got it. Our waitress was slow and only came to the table a few times. We asked for refills and after a long wait, we finally had to get up and go get them ourselves. The crawfish... we ordered 5 lbs and got 1 potato and 1 corn.. for 4 of us.. had we all ordered our crawfish separately, each plate would come with the corn and potato. But with 5 lbs to share, you just get one each? Fix that.. we had to sort through the crawfish to find the ones that were edible. They would literally fall apart as you picked them up. Either they were dead when they were boiled or they had been sitting in the boil way too long. Out of the 5 lb, I bet we got to eat maybe 2 lbs. The rest were garbage. I get that the place is new and this day was busy, but there is a lot of work that needs to be done. I heard a lot of excuses, but I got the impression that nobody really gave a crap about how horrible things were going. A lot of chaos and confusion going on. Unfortunately, I will...
Read moreWe came back in March and loved the food, service and atmosphere. Today we came in for a late lunch and should have known it wouldn’t be the same when only one other table was occupied. We arrived with someone across the room just yelling sit wherever you want. Took a bit for server to come to table. Husband wanted to order the “what’s in the net”. Was told they don’t have that anymore because they have a new cook and have to make it easier for him. Tried to order the mushrooms. Out of those too. Then told us no jalepenos either. Daughter got the crab boil. It had ZERO seasoning. The “butter” was grill oil. Had two small potatoes and a corn cob none of which had any seasoning. Husband settled for catfish basket, which his review was “that was the terrible ”. I had the shrimp basket and asked to substitute okra for coleslaw. Came out with okra and coleslaw. Forgot the huspuppies and fries. When pointed out to waiter he brought quickly brought out a “whole order” of hushpuppies and never realized the fries weren’t on the plate. By this time I said I didn’t want them. My shrimp was cold and the breading was soggy. We also had boudin balls as appetizer. They were definitely lackluster. Major disappointment compared to our first visit. We ate half and going to let the dogs have the leftovers. Definitely not...
