California Tortilla — Restaurant in Frederick

I really like this joint. It's kind of like Chipotle without the smarmy overly-trendy feel. This is fresh tex/mex food with flair, reasonable prices and good service. I have been here several times now, and the food is fresh. It's prepared right in front of you. The menu has lots of options and you can customize your meal. You can't beat the fresh avocado or cilantro -- tough to find such good ingredients these days. This is a great place if you have food allergies or dietary limitations.

This place has it all though, including a 'wall of fire' -- a robust variety of hot sauces for you to pick through, and organized by heat index! Maybe you just want a little heat, maybe you want a lot...Cali Tort has done the work for you so you don't get yourself in hot sauce trouble.

On our last visit, the manager came over to our table to ask how we liked our meal. Now, understand this is not a high end restaurant. This is a fun little spot for a quick, fresh meal. But this place has a good vibe -- like the employees enjoy their job, the manager actually cares. It's a newer business so they take excellent care to ensure everything is as it should be. I maybe get takeout once every month or two from this location, but for the past year, the quality of food has gone down significantly. Last time I ordered, I got a couple carnitas street tacos, and when I got home, they were absolutely sopping wet, because the cooks couldn't be bothered to properly drain the meat beforehand. My hand was soaked just picking them up, and that was with the wrapper still on. After opening them, the corn tortillas just fell apart. It was disgusting. I decided maybe it was a one off thing. So today, I picked up a California Screaming Burrito Bowl, and run into a similar situation, where the vegetables are soggy, and the beans weren't drained so the rice is soggy. It's just one big bowl of mush. Last time I order carry-out from that location for a long time, if ever. If I had dined in, these dishes would have been sent back due to a significant lack of quality. But I guess since it was carry-out, the employees don't care about the end product,...

Parking is tricky in the evenings due to not enough spaces for the strip mall shops in use. The food is good, but not consistently so. Sometimes it's clean, but several times we've gone the tables aren't wiped off and the floor is sticky. For the most part we do enjoy their food, and they have a nice, easy rewards program for frequent eaters from which we've enjoyed good discounts. I'm not a fan of their salsa, but their queso is good. Fish tacos and Blackened Chicken Cesar burrito is great. Don't bother with their salad bowls though. Compared to what you get with their burritos, the salad is small...
