Came in last minute with my family to celebrate my mother's dinner. I have been in the Burg most of my life and will say that I have never seen this place. Had no issue getting sat for a Wednesday dinner.
Physical Features: lots of parking I like the entrance, it feels very secluded. I believe there needs to be some updating, and I honestly think it can be done and keep the Fredericksburg flare. There is some work to be done in the bathrooms. The ceiling tiles need some maintenance, and I think the walls need a paint and some texture, while getting rid of the tacky designs. The space may be happy with the 80s boxy layout, and it may come back in style. I however, find it to be a bit... weird. There was music playing so faintly that, our table seemed amplified louder than we meant to.
The Staff: Our host was friendly and kinda laid back and funny, which I really enjoy. Our waiter, Robert, was a trip! So attentive and funny, good humor dude who seems to enjoy being a social person!
The Food: Butter is a major food group here. The drinks are as strong as they are pricey. The bread is lackluster, but I was famished. I think the stuffed mushrooms were a little under done. The caps were almost raw, and the cheese on top was like glue. The crab was fine, but it was hard to taste it over the cheese glob. They were floating in a butter river. The creamed spinach seems like a weird flex, but it slapped. I ordered the Fresh Sea Scallops, I was worried they only came fried but I could get them broiled. They came in their bowl of butter and lemon juice. They were actually very soft and delicious, they didn't taste frozen. However, I do think a little pepper and perhaps some dill or garlic, thyme, parsely, and tarragon would really amp a flavor profile. My nephew said his steak was overdone. My sister found her fish to be under seasoned, dry, and not completely dressed (she found some pins) The salad is definitely just spring mix. My mother loved her birthday dark chocolate cake.
The Summary: What a cute little restaurant! It definitely is in love with butter and the 80s. That could be nostalgic or it could be harmful. The entrance of this building feels like a hidden gem, but some maintenance would go a long way. Fresh bread, updated sides, and just a little more to their salads would really create a modern vibe, while being cost affective. A few more shareable appetizers would pull in a profile with larger crowds or those who want to order a la carte over the menu. The staff is ready for direction and filled with a bite back humour that would make me want to sit at the bar and order drink after drink. It's definitely a little pricey, but as long as that price isn't used to pay for old flash frozen seafood, we have a deal. Using olive oil, less butter, and turning down those pans for their land meat entrees could solve a lot of the overdone in the red meats. I would be back again because my scallops were the softest ones I have ever ate, and I really want you guys to stick around because I liked the Staff a lot and I don't think we have too many fish focused...
Read moreI had been waiting for a long time to try this place out and I'm glad I did. I was actually a little reluctant to do so because of some of the reviews, but I'm glad I did anyway.
It does look small from the street, but that's very misleading, it's huge inside and the decor is very fancy.
We arrived right after they opened on a Saturday. The hostess was on the telephone with a customer, but a gentleman leaving the kitchen greeted us and seated us immediately, even pulling out the chair for my wife before I could get to it, and left a cocktail and entree menus with us to look over.
Our waitress, Serene, was phenomenal. She came to the table and greeted us shortly after and offered us wine, providing us a recommendation for their house special, which we decided to order. She also took the time to explain all their specials and the layout of their menu, which helped with device was to order.
While she went to get our wine, we decided to each get a bowl of the lobster bisque, which was served along with a basket of warm bread within a few minutes.
Having looked at their reviews and menu before arriving, I was was already set on the Broiled Seafood Platter, but the waitress made sure to answer all of my questions about the other entrees. I did end up going with that, along with creamed spinach and their garden salad with house Bleu Cheese dressing as my sides. My wife ordered the stuffed lobster tail and the same sides.
The stuffed lobster tail was large and pre-split down the bottom, which made eating it very easy for my wife. It was stuffed with their crab meat, which tasted excellent.
My seafood platter came with jumbo shrimp, scallops, a filet of flounder, lobster meat, and a crab cake. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. The shrimp and the scallops were some of the largest I've ever had. There was plenty of food and I was feeling quite full before I finished dining, even though this was my only meal of the day because I had been fasting. The bread rolls were also warm, soft and airy, with a chewy crust, and was served with individually wrapped butter slices- perhaps due to the COVID pandemic. The creamed spinach was warm, soft and buttery with a light seasoning, which was really good, and the garden salad was green and fresh, the house Bleu Cheese was very good, with a hint of dill which gave it an extra little kick.
Even though we were already full, we still had a couple of glasses of wine left in the bottle, so we ordered dessert. My wife ordered their chocolate cake, which she absolutely loved, as it was served with whipped cream and strawberries. I ordered the bourbon pecan pie, which was served with vanilla ice cream. The notes of bourbon in the pie were pronounced just enough to accent the pecans and the carmel in the filling, and was not over powering at all. If you like pecan pie, but do not like bourbon, I would still recommend you give this one a try.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the service and quality of food here, and am planning to return again both for evenings with my wife as well as with friends and family from...
Read moreLet me start by saying I have done many reviews and I always leave room opportunities for improvement if I should ever come across any type of unpleasant experience at any place I write a review for. My first impression of this restaurant was wonderful. As you pull into the parking lot, it appears to be a cozy little steakhouse. The inside is very large and beautiful with vaulted ceilings. The tables are lit up with little oil lamps, that set the mood. Staff are all dressed up very formally. I was listening to others talking about how far they traveled to come visit this place. The linens were all pressed and white, prim and proper. I could hardly wait to taste the menu. I thought about great everything was going to be. The waiter was prompt in introducing himself and asked if would like to get started with drinks and recommend the stuffed mushrooms. We took his advice and ordered the 18.00 stuffed mushrooms with cheese and crab meat. When our order came to the table I was dissapointed. 4 button mushrooms with a layers of cheese over them. (Approximately and inch in diameter) I was a little confused on the size, but figured...it must be in the taste. I bit into the first little button mushroom to find it had not even been hollowed out and I wondered where the crab meat was. I found the tiny amount of crab meat stuck to my cheese (about the size of a pencil eraser). I then figured I would give another one a try. Same thing with that one.... I did find one with dime size amount on one of four. I ordered the 34.00 Norfolk crabmeat with creamed spinach. The wait time was about average and everything came out nice and hot. The crab meat was bland but nice texture. The creamed spinach was nicely done. The waiter took about 20 minutes after meal served to ask if we needed anything. By that time we were half way done with the meal. I didn't finish my crab meat as I didn't find it appetizing. After not seeing our waiter for another 25 to 30 minutes, another waitress came to ask if we needing anything (this most likely was prompted by us putting on our coats). A lady (assuming she was the owner) was behind the bar about 25 feet from our table. There were approximately 10 tables with at least 4 or 5 staff. We asked for some boxes and the check. The waitress promptly brought us the boxes and went to retrieve the waiter. He returned with the check and we handed him the credit card as we were in a hurry. (We had already been there almost 2 hours). He then proceeded to bring out another table's food before he ran our bill. After returning with the paid check we realized we were charged for someone else's tab (50.00 more than ours). At this point I was getting fustrated. We went to the bar and talked to the lady (owner?) And she told us she was sorry and he was 2 weeks new on the job. She proceeded to call him to get the correct bill and make the adjustment. I did receive an apology....but that is all. I am sad to say this will be my first and last time here at Olde Towne...
