This is my second time eating in this restaurant and first time dining in. I came when the restaurant first opened and had takeouts. The restaurant has been super busy since then and stopped allowing takeouts and so I didn’t get a chance to try them again until now. I have to say this is the worst dining experience ever in my life. My friends and I ordered two Thai teas and they were both sour. Thai tea is either sweet or bitter(not enough condensed milk added), but never sour. The waiter said he will go check for me and he came back saying there was something wrong with the tea. He didn’t dare to say but the truth is the tea has gone bad. He says he can give us new ones if we want or he can cancel this order; no apologies. We said we want new ones and we got fresh ones that tasted normal. Then, the food came. One of my friends ordered the same dish as me (vege+chicken cutlet combo) but his with level 3 spiciness and mine with level 1. We double checked with the waiter if the one she took was level 3 TWICE, and she said yes both times. And then another dish came to me and I ask the second waiter if this one was mild and she said yes. When I took a bite it was very spicy and I asked my friend how was his and he said it’s not spicy at all. We both ordered the same thing but his dish didn’t have green beans, only potatoes and carrots while mine had all of them. I was pissed at this point with expired Thai tea and wrong dishes after I have triple checked with the waiter. I flagged down a waiter and tried to tell her what was happening but she was so lost like she didn’t speak English. She went and got the manager and the manager changed all the dishes quickly and basically escaped from the scene. When he came back with the right food he apologized for everything and then told me that the spicier curry has a darker color. I was quite confused at that comment, like it’s my responsibility to know that? I asked the waiter 3 times already. After we were finished eating, I asked for the check and I thought the manager would at least take the Thai tea off of the check since they have completely gone bad. But the manager was confused why he needed to because he has replaced everything for me already. So I need to pay full price for expired Thai tea and all the wrong dishes? He kept on repeating they did wrong but he has replaced everything so I need to pay for everything. I told him it’s the restaurant’s responsibility that he needs to give me right and fresh food and that’s true even in a legal standpoint. So it is clearly not legal to give me expired food. He finally gave in and did not charge me. I was so pissed when I got the bad tea and wrong food that I didn’t take any pictures; I just sent everything back immediately. While I was waiting for the new food and drink, I realized I was sitting right in front of their “slogan” and all of this mess felt so sarcastic. No smile, no prompt work and...
Read moreMe and my group waited 80mins to try this hyped curry chain from Japan and sadly, food was quite disappointing and below average. I gave them 3 stars however for their excellent customer service and our enthusiastic waiter.
Coco’s curry is on the loose side. But my biggest problem was their cold fried proteins. my chicken katsu and a bowl of spicy chicken teriyaki that we shared as a group.
The first dish came out in LESS THAN A MINUTE after the waiter took our order. I was a little skeptical given how quickly the orders came out because most included katsu (pork or chicken) that needs frying. Everything except for the fried dumplings came out in under 5mins which was surprising because I’m used to waiting at least 10-15mins at GoGo Curry even when they have no customers. (But in about few seconds, I found out why) While the omelet was fluffy, my chicken katsu was BARELY lukewarm as if it had been sitting on a rack for 30mins. That would explain how all of our dishes came out flying one after another.. Chicken katsu thickness was also uneven - one side severely “pounded” than the other making some bites more oily than another. (Much minor issue compared to the lukewarm soggy part) The spicy teriyaki chicken was overly coated and drenched in an odd tasting sauce (gochujang-wannabe). It didn’t have much meat at all, just lots of coating. Sad.
Honestly, all I could think was “I waited 80 mins in to eat something I could’ve gotten at the Mitsuwa foodcourt?? (or any other basic restaurant that serves a curry katsu 🙄)”
I want to tell myself that this was just a ONE TIME fluke and that they took a shortcut during their busy soft opening week — but another part of me is feeling like, how could you serve something lower than average to your first time customers? For a $17+ for a dish, am I crazy to expect a freshly fried katsu? I did enjoy the free side if pickled radishes at the table.
TLDR: As of this moment, I’d much prefer GoGo Curry. Their curry is more concentrated and flavorful (ofc this is just my opinion) and their katsu is always hot and crispy. Some might prefer Coco’s curry and their option for spicy levels but for me, lukewarm katsu is a deal breaker….
Atmosphere: Took off a star because it was quite hot inside, even at 8pm 🥵 My friend who always complains that it’s cold wherever we go actually said that she’s...
Read moreAs others have commented, I too am a service member who was stationed in Japan who loved CoCo's curry 🍛
It's been 10 years since I've been able to enjoy it's food and man did I miss it. After a long time waiting for this location to open, I made the multi hour drive to the restaurant and oh let me tell you, it was worth it 👌
First off the atmosphere is very reminiscent of the locations in Japan. At the door you'll be greated with a computer, add yourself to the reservation and shortly after you'll be ready to sit.
Once you walk inside you're welcomed in Japanese and then shown or pointed to a table. The menu has changed since so long ago but is still fairly easy to follow along with. My go to order was the Chicken Cutlet Curry with cheese, level 8, and a garlic cheese Naan. There's a little jar on the table, don't worry about what it is, add a little to your curry, doesn't matter which curry you got, it makes it taste even better. If you get something that's just too spicy, add some soy sauce as that helps (unless you got way too high of a level for you to handle). For the old CoCo's goers, it used to be levels 1-10, I used to get a level 5 on the old scale. The old level 5 now is more like a level 8 or 9 out of a lot higher. The scale goes up to 24 so if you like spicy this is the place for you. The chicken was a little thinner than normal, but still delicious. The curry was thick, rich, and VERY cheesy (they do not skimp on the cheese). The flavors were exactly what I remembered from so long ago and I couldn't help but smile. Your table will be silent because no one will want to stop eating their food. The staff was young except for the very kind older Japanese man who was so helpful! When you're done simply go to the front where the register is and check out.
I ordered takeout as well and it's not a 10/10 because of the reheating of the fried chicken and the cheese in the curry but it was still absolutely delicious. Maybe put the chicken in an air fryer at 400°F for 2 minutes, and the curry just heat and stir until the cheese isn't clumped anymore.
You will not regret giving this place a try. 10/10 highly recommend.
Additionally, my lady tried this for the first time and she absolutely...
