Nice outdoor atmosphere, poor consistency of food. Notice the inconsistency of the reviews here!

My wife and I look forward to eating at Moon Dog when we are staying in the Port Aransas TX area. We drive about an hour (over the ferry) just to have a nice mid-week early lunch there. This time, though, we had a terrible experience. Dishes we had ordered in the past were poorly prepared. To begin with, we were told that they were out of baked potatoes! Only the beginning of the problems.... The beer-battered shrimp that I ordered was so salty it was gaggingly inedible, and this is no exaggeration. Last time I had it, it was nice and hot, perfectly seasoned and delicious. I have never sent food back in a restaurant before, but I did this time and told them to give me the grilled fish of the day. My wife ordered the grilled fish of the day (grouper), and instead of what she got last time, this fish was basically a blackened version (which is one of the options), there were no grille marks, so I assume it was cooked on a griddle. She is very sensitive to highly-spiced foods, and she thought she would be safe ordering this since it was so wonderful at our last visit, but it was so spicy hot that she could not eat it (it was giving her a headache). The waiter, who was very nice but very timid and soft spoken, checked with the cook and confirmed that indeed it was grilled, but he said the cook likes to "heavily season" the food. After waiting a very long time, our waiter brought out my fish, which was cooked like my wife's--blackened and very spicy, which I actually like. But, we boxed up our stuff and took it with us instead of hanging around to eat. I don't fault our waiter, it is the management in this case. I'm guessing it takes special attention of management to make sure the menu is cooked the same way by different cooks so that your restaurant has a consistent taste no matter the time of day and who is on duty. Just because one cook has no ability to season food properly, that should not ruin the menu! Our bill was about $65, and I did tip the waiter. I don't think we will be back,...

Walked in expecting to be able to sit out on the grass patio area since we have 2 dogs with us. One on the larger side. Was informed we couldn't sit out there currently, so they sat us on the inside part, which is fine. But the table they wanted us at meant there was zero area for the dogs to lay except in the walkway. Also, as we walked down, there was an employee in a blue shirt loudly cussing and going off about "going to war with the democrats." I'm trying to enjoy a meal, not listen to the wait staffs politics and cussing. It's highly inappropriate. We told them we were trying to decide since that table didn't work and she didn't offer another table she just said "okay" and walked away. So we went up to the bar area to ask about sitting on the upper area. The bartender was very helpful, saying he wasn't very busy and he'd be happy to sit us up there and serve us. Well, up comes our waitress, and she is immediately upset about us talking to him? We explained our issue and she starts laying into the bartender about why we can't and how she has her seating area and couldn't possibly serve the 2 tables separately. I understand restaurants have a way to operate, but it's one table down there where they had us, and the bartender was more than happy to assist us. Unlike anyone else on the staff. So we left. It's no accommodating. They are cussing loudly about politics. And they are yelling at each other. The bartender should get a raise for being the only one willing to help and offer a solution. My dog travels everywhere with me, and I have never experienced an issue like this. Nor a wait staff like that. Was really looking forward to eating there and enjoying their view. But I'm not spending my money in a place that allows their staff to yell and cuss about politics and then be completely unwilling to work with us as they get mad at each other. As I said, bartender deserves better treatment from his fellow workers and he was the only one...

I never complain about restaurants...but we experienced the most horrible customer service at the tables. We placed our order and got our drinks...then continued to see our waitress only wait on a table with large amounts of alcohol. She never checked on us while ww waited for our food. I went to the hostess at the front (who was phenomenal the entire visit) and asked her if someone could please check on our food as many tables around us received theirs and were leaving....even though they arrived far after us. a couple minutes later our food magically appears, is cold and soggy so we sent one dish back so we could at least try and feed our kiddos. Our waitress finally came to our table only to ask why we sent our food back?! we waited for awhile for the new plate...my husband had to leave with 2 of our kiddos it took so long and finally tacos came out. I asked to speak to a manager. The manager said she would comp the tacos but not anything else because we at the meat off the sandwich. I told her I'd pay for it all...its not about the money. I asked for a to-go box and she told me I could not have one because I didn't pay for them 😂 i was beside myself. to make it worse our waitress handed off our ticket to another waitress and shouted "drop it like its hot" and the other waitress shouted it back. I left with tacos in my kids drink cups...the people besides us experienced the same awful service. The only positive...the girls at the front were the most kind and helpful people and when I left, I tried to tip them but they politely declined. Don't give them a chance until you are getting...

Took a day trip to Goose Island and Rockport beach, and stopped here for lunch. The draw for us was they are pet friendly (with the caveat that you have to eat in the outdoor section). The staff was nice, they brought the doggo a bowl of ice water and showed her some love (they even asked before petting her, which is not done often enough, and we greatly appreciated it). The food was okay. I had the southwest fish tacos, which were good, but they were a bit overloaded for the size of the tortillas (huge chunks of lettuce were a turn off) and the mango pineapple salsa was a little bland. The fries were a letdown (no salt, dry and soggy at the same time). One kid had the philly sandwich, which was pretty good. There was a lot of meat, peppers, and onions, and the au jus they serve it with was not bad at all. Other kid had chicken alfredo, which I thought was the best on the table. The chicken was of generous size, and the alfredo was very delicious. They don't just use plain grilled chicken, it was nicely seasoned, which I think complemented the sauce of the pasta wonderfully. Wife had the salad... it was salad. All in all, Moondog was a good stop that we could bring our pup in, but the cost of the food was not really worth the experience/quality. It is a waterfront restaurant, but you don't really get much waterfront, so we likely will look for other pet-friendly options next time around.
