Ordered a Sicilian sandwich and was very disappointed. It seems the cheese and spicy mayo just does not pair well. Also the cheese did not seem melted enough as when we opened the sandwich, we could still see the shreds. Adding to the low rating was the service. First off, any place that wants you to tip for stand up counter service or before service is rendered automatically gets one star. Businesses have to end this practice of shaming customers into subsidizing their employees income. You want your employees to make more? Pay them more. Now for service, we ordered the sandwich with no peppers, and my brother in law ordered the same with peppers. When we were given the sandwich, the employee asked who had no peppers and gave me mine and the other sandwich to my BIL. My BIL immediately tore into his as I'm realizing I was given the one with peppers. Too late to trade. I went inside to let them know what happened and was offered another sandwich to be remade. Well, this took just as long as the first one to be made and my BIL was finished before I even got my replacement. I had to go inside to check on why it was taking so long. Also, I had to go inside again to get napkins myself. This is why the practice of tipping before service has to end, because there was no way I was tipping for...
Read moreSo happy to see Galveston get a winery. The service has been great every time I have been and I enjoyed the wines I have tried. However, the biggest drawback for me is the ambiance.
The lighting is very bright and feels sterile. I would appreciate some dimmer mood lighting that would be more fitting of a wine bar. The furniture is very random and out of place, it has no particular theme or aesthetic at all. The vibe I get is of being in an office conference room or a dentist’s waiting room, which is not the ideal environment to enjoy a glass of wine. I do appreciate the outdoor seating, which is where I opt to sit when I do visit.
I am glad that they have decided to branch out from exclusively Texas wines and provide options from other regions. Although Texas does have some great wines, they are usually too expensive for the quality of wine that is produced. I recommend not limiting the selection to only domestic vineyards.
Being the only wine bar in Galveston besides maybe Empouria, I have high hopes for this place to succeed. I believe they have a good base they can build on and they can easily improve...
Read moreHendley Wine Co. is a true gem in the heart of Galveston's historic Strand district. My visit was nothing short of exceptional! I enjoyed a beautifully arranged charcuterie board paired with two exquisite glasses of wine, and it was a perfect match. The ambiance of the Hendley Building, with its rich history as the oldest commercial structure in Galveston, adds to the charm of this wine bar.
David, our server, was a standout. His extensive knowledge of the wines and their origins was impressive, and he provided insightful details on the nuances of each selection. The variety of Texas wines, including offerings from the renowned Chris Williams Vineyard and other celebrated local vineyards, is truly remarkable. The selection of domestic beers, seltzers, and sodas ensures there’s something for everyone.
The charcuterie board and deli sandwiches are a must-try and perfectly complement the wine flights. I highly recommend visiting Hendley Wine Co. for a delightful experience of fine Texas wines, great food, and outstanding service. A five-star...
