I have a beach house on the west end of the island and visit the Strand quite often to shop with friends that visit, go to the Lone Star Rally, the Mardi Gras celebration, and whatever else happens to be going on when I’m down on the island. With that said, this past weekend some friends wanted to go down to the Strand so they could do a little shopping. They had been there before, so they knew their way around, and me not being a big shopper type, soon broke away with one of the guys to walk the Strand instead of shopping. Anyway, after walking up one side and down the other, we decide to get a beer and happened upon this “hole in the wall,” no literally, it was between two building. I had seen it before but never ventured in, but for some reason, I was drawn to it and we decided this was it. It was relatively crowded, but we found a seat outside at one of the tall table on the patio, but being it was super hot that day, and we had just walked the entire Strand, we decided to move inside where it looked to be air conditioned. It was a narrow atrium type building, with a bar and a few two top tables along the atrium wall, and there was a TV on above the bar with the Astros game about to start. We ended up sitting at the end of the bar; it was a busy place, with bartenders and waitresses hustling back and forth from the bar to the patio, and I quickly noticed they were all wearing tie-dyed tops. It was the perfect place for my friend and I to sit, cool off, and have a beer while talking. As I looked around, they had an area at other end of the bar that was dedicated to about a million beer taps, and we both thought, “No way they all work,” but soon we found out that indeed they had a huge selection of beers on tap. I continued to look around as we waited for a bartender to greet us, and catching the eye of this nice-looking bartender, she motioned that she would be right with us. We only waited only a few minutes before she brought us a menu and this double-sided list of all the beers they had on tap. The selection was amazing and it was hard to choose, but we managed. The beer was cold and it really hit the spot as we sat there talking. The bartender asked how we were doing and asked if we wanted anything to eat, suggesting several items. She was very pleasant, and did I mention she was attractive. Anyway, we had only stopped in for a beer and to get out of the heat, but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was obviously hard working, but they were also very friendly, and easy to talk with, including our bartender who was super busy, but she too made time to talk with us, which was very nice. I wish we could have stayed longer, I wanted try a few of the other beers and would have enjoyed talking more with the bartender. I plan to visit again very soon to try their a few of their beers and try some of there food, and hopefully I can catch up with the...
Read moreQueso is awesome, truly! I’m not sure of their secret ingredients but it’s not runny, not thick, not orange but not blanco either. Chips are freshly made there and served hot. I don’t care for the gaucamole Cremar as a side but definitely as a topping. We’ve not gotten past the breakfast tacos yet but the bacon, egg and cheese ones are spectacular. Perfect ratio of filling to tortilla. Served on a smaller corn or flour tortilla, one is enough for me. The tortillas are fresh and buttery, not too thin and not too fat. We’ll be working our way through the menu. Thanks to Brittany for the great service this morning and delicious mimosa!!
March 15, 2020. Please fix coke and lemonade and cranberry lines! The first two have been broken for 5 months. Thank y’all!!!
7/20/21 New management, not sure about ownership. Breakfast burritos are bigger and more expensive but still good. We preferred the street taco size. Everything is served in paper bowls as opposed to on the sheet pans. Our nachos were crammed into one when they used to be spread out on the sheet. Quality of meat not great. No more avocado crema. 🙁
3/8/22. Wow! An improvement! No more flies inside, bigger tacos and queso still awesome. Thanks for cleaning it up a bit!!
June 2022 more flystrips please, the bugs are back!
July 27, 2023. ShaunnyBoy our waiter was fantastic with large breakfast tacos served quickly (we sat inside) but the trash talk going on loudly at the bar between patrons and staff made us leave before we were done eating. I’m no saint but we had our 4 year old granddaughter with us. Every other word was a cuss word and they were trying to top their drunken fighting and DWI stories. Absolutely no awareness or care for the 3 customers inside. Rude & crude.
10/21/24. Have to update and upgrade. New staff and great presentation of tacos. Very generous portions. Pleasantly surprised and happy to come back to this local spot now. Our waitress was Jai, she was efficient and pleasant.
4/24/25We've been going here since 2018, supporting them through Covid and frequent as often as we can. We've seen the management change. Portions change as well as service personnel. We went yesterday and had the chips, queso and guacamole which is a meal in itself. I think they have the best queso on the island. The guacamole was hefty, with nice chunks of avocado amongst ccilantro, tomato, onion and jalapeño. Husband got the breakfast taco and I got the southwest chicken. They were huge!!and they've graduated to actual plates! It used to be paper trays, then aluminum and now....real plates! Bravo! Jai was awesome and has a pleasant and patient disposition. Bar is always full with patrons trying the rotatioon of craft beers. Not much for Winos but mimosa and barefoot Chardonnay but oh well. We go for the food! Great outside area but you'll be fighting flies. No pix,...
Read moreWe visited on June 7th and we went inside of the little building sat at the only clean table out of the two tables available on the inside, all other seating is at the bar or 2 seater tables very cramped on the inside, the outside seating area is better but it was extremely hot outside and we were hoping to cool off inside, but it really wasn't that cool. And we sat there waiting and waiting for a waitress to come to the table nobody ever came there was 2 waitresses going in and outside waiting tables outside and then the guy behind the bar never acknowledged us at all, I had to finally ask one of the waitress for a menu, we looked made our choices and still no one came to use. I walked to the counter and said hi we've never been here to guy asked so how does this work we've been sitting over there for about 15 minutes and no one has been over to help us, he said well that he was sorry about that but he can take our order then one of the girls got on his case and said he should have gotten to us sooner. We ordered our food and he didn't even ask if we wanted anything to drink or not. I was already upset for having a long waiting period I forgot to, so I had to walk back up to the counter to make a order for the drinks. We did get our appetizers and food fairly quickly once ordered, and it was mostly good. But had to get the outside waitresses to get us refills on our drinks. I will say the guy did apologize when we were leaving and paying the bill he did give us a decent discount. I don't mind ordering at the counter or even getting my own drinks if needed but it should be posted or explained. I'd say I'd go back cause the food was good but inside service was lacking would probably sit outside and get better service and suffering...
