Sushi and hibachi options are few and far between in Northwest Lower unless you're in Traverse City. My wife and I live in Petoskey, and we were intrigued when we heard Rafi's opened in Gaylord in summer 2023. We tried it for the first time in November 2023 to celebrate my wife's birthday. She got two sushi rolls, while I ordered the bulgogi steak and shrimp hibachi. Both meals featured generous portions and excellent flavor. Preparation was well thought out as well. We both enjoyed our meals very much and definitely plan to be back in the near future! The extensive menu provides plenty of options for sushi, hibachi, and other Asian items. My only constructive criticism is that my miso soup and salad actually came out after my hibachi dish. Ideally the soup and salad should arrive 5-10 minutes before the main hibachi dish.

Rafi’s Hibachi & Sushi 🍣🍶 This place is a must! If you visit Gaylord, MI don’t miss out!! 🍛Food : I must say I love sushi and try out so many places and Rafi’s restaurant got it! The roll is really good, tasty and fresh the chef know exactly what he do. Well decor on my plate. For Hibachi I order Lobster tails they come with Fried rice and stir-fry Vegetable which is taste very good as well. I think the price is reasonable compare to the amount of food and the freshness. you must know Japanese food it’s a price to eat to keep all the fresh and quality to get to you. 💁🏻‍♂️Service : Service is good they are really friendly and nice. 🌟Atmosphere : Great place stop by for nice lunch or family dinner. Calm and relax vibe but might be a pretty busy at dinner time. Overall this restaurant is nice place to visit and try out!

The food looked amazing, the service was great and the place was clean. Overall we were happy and left full and content. Had the Avocado Roll, the Spicy Scallop Roll, the Udon and the Bibimbop Bilgogi. I was surprised that the shrimp in the Avocado Roll was fried, I would have preferred it not fried, but it was good and we ate it anyway. The rice in the Bilgogi was a tad overcooked (crunchy) around the edges, but again, the overall taste was there for the rest of the dish and we ate it all up, except for the rice, there was a lot of rice. This restaurant is a great addition to Gaylord and we look forward to future visits as we learn to navigate the very large menu.

My wife ordered fried rice, and they brought her white rice, which she was willing to eat (the server did not ask if everything looked correct, she dropped off the food and immediately walked away) until she realized it was covered in what we think was teriyaki sauce, even though there were two cups of sauce that came on her plate.

We sat and ate over the course of the next half hour, and not once did our server or anyone else stop at our table to ask how anything was, whether we needed anything else, nothing. The restaurant had maybe two other groups of customers at the time between 2 and 3PM.

As we wrapped up eating, our server (again, her name was Vania) finally returned to ask if we wanted more water (real smart cookie here, to ignore our empty glasses for all that time, only to offer it when we are finished) I said I was fine but my wife said "Yes, please." The server's response was to look at my wife and say,"You're good too then?" At this point, we just wanted to leave, so as we were leaving our payment, we decided this was bad service, not just average, so we chose not to tip this time. As we are putting on our coats, our server then stands just off to the side, hovering, waiting to clean up. So it was very important we get out but not important that we be treated well.

This morning, we discovered they charged us an extra 10 dollars (nowhere on the bill was it mentioned that gratuity was required, nor was it mentioned that it would be automatically added at any point)

Vania STOLE from us.

Average food that was not exactly what we ordered, poor to no service at almost every point that it was needed, and a slap on the hand as a punishment for their own terrible service.

When we called to fix it, they fought us every step of the way until they refunded us.

We will not be visiting again, and we will be sure to let anyone we know visiting the area to NOT go to...

One very positive thing at Rafi’s, nice server, not sure of her name, long dark hair. This is an Asian restaurant with no Asian ambiance. There was pop music playing which would’ve been fine except it was obviously on a free app because commercials kept coming on. At one point a Tremfya commercial came on talking about diarrhea and infection… not super appetizing! The food was just ok. We ordered two specialty sushi rolls, both of them were over $20 each. They came out together on one small plate. One roll was only 4 pieces and the other only 6. I think this is because of the large size in diameter which actually made the rolls much too wide to eat in one bite. This could’ve still been ok but they were not rolled tightly enough to stay together to cut or to bite into without the entire thing falling apart. The Jumbo Spider Roll had almost no meat in it. The tempura breading was thicker than the actual meat. TBH I’ve had better sushi from Meijer. I probably wouldn’t have written this bad review, but the receipt had the following phrase on it. “How are we doing? Text dgxtcb” to 73752 to send us your feedback”. So I did and when I attempted to provide a negative response it replied that this isn’t a valid code so I wanted to make sure to send my feedback to Rafi’s somehow. This experience for wasn’t any fun and we likely...

Tl;dr The food was fantastic. The waitress was spacey. QR code was pushed onto us before we could order.

The food was great, excellent even. I would change nothing about the food me and my friend were served, but the service was horrid. Our waitress, Shannon, was unattentive, flaky, and very distracted. When we asked what drinks were available she pointed us at a QR code and refused to give us menus until we ordered drinks. Once we had finally ordered and gotten our food (the wait was very short from time of order to food at table) Shannon all but ignored us for the rest of the service. Note the restaurant was mostly dead. Me and my friend and only one other table were occupied. It took almost 30 minutes for us to receive our bill from the time we had finished our meal. The other table being served was a single man and he seemed to be very intimate with the waitress. He was being physically intimate. While we were waiting for our bill another group walked in and sat down and were waiting for about ten minutes before the owner walked in and told Shannon to turn around from the counter she was staring at to service them. Shannon seemed nice, but she was not attentive with her work.

Absolute mad props to the chefs in the back. They made...
