I had a friend visiting from out of state and we went into the Berry House to peruse the various shops located in here - one of which was (going to be) the Coffee Drop Shop.
Not even 30 seconds after opening the door, an unmasked woman (this is during the time of the mask mandate in Illinois regardless of vaccination status) glared at us and aggressively asked "Excuse me! Can I help you!?" We explained we were going to look around to which she curtly responded "I don't know what you think you are doing but I am the only store open." As I tend to avoid conflict (and in all honesty, I was still processing why there was this level of hostility from this woman) - I quietly explained that my friend was from out of state and I wanted to show her around. At this point, she raised her voice even more and scolded us by saying that we weren't allowed.
We backed away from her and headed upstairs while she continued yelling at us. Interestingly - when we got upstairs, we found a salon to be open (yet she said everything was closed). Even more interesting - after walking around (and within earshot of the Coffee Drop Shop) we encountered another patron who obviously did not receive the kind of treatment we did - I can't help but wonder if it was because we were younger and my friend is not white.
Either way - our plans to visit the Coffee Drop Shop after looking at other stores in the Berry House were obviously cancelled....
Read moreMy husband and i frequent this quaint litle shop and as a tea drinker, she has a wonderful selection from roobios to green and even exotic teas. My hubands usualy buys coffee beans by the pound and there are a wide cariety of in house roasted flavor selections to grab by the pound. I want to address the comments about the owner...This is not a starbucks..it is an elderly woman who has run a family coffee business for 50 years. She works extremely hard often on her own to keep her business going in this market. She brews 2 pots of coffee on the weekends and YES its an old drop coffee machine...and YES its served in a styrofoam cup. There are no fancy creamers...no almond milk and only one type of sugar..sugar... This is in my opniion just a add-on service to grab a cup while you shop. She works from the early morning sometimes to late at night doing orders, stock, invetory, and of course roasting pounds of coffee. So dont come here with a "double shot caramel machiato half fat lattte" order and think she is going to smile at you.... let's be real..when you are 70+ years old working 12 hours a day on your feet, then you can make judgements about your 1.00 tax free coffee not being served with the perfect...
Read moreThe lady working the coffee bar was very rude. I walked in under the impression that this was a coffee shop. It is not. When I asked for a coffee, I was sternly told no, that they “only brew two types of beans a day” and that coffee was not made to order. My options were black or coconut flavored. I chose coconut, to which the woman came around the counter, and poured me a cup from a dirty stein into a styrofoam cup. When she asked me if I’d like cream, I said yes, and she plopped a carton of half and half in front of me and told me to pour it myself. I left with my $1 coffee soon after. It was a very weak brew, mostly water. How anyone could call this a coffee shop...
