We searched high and low for a vegan and gluten-free bakery that was (1) delicious, (2) affordable, (3) close to the Chicago suburbs, (4) willing to make simple cupcakes for our wedding dessert. We secured a different bakery before the pandemic, however when we had to postpone our wedding that bakery unfortunately closed. We were so sad, and tried several other bakeries that just didnât do it for usâŚand then we found Eye Candy! They checked ALL the boxesâŚespecially in terms of deliciousness! We actually never tasted the flavors we chose for our wedding before the big day (they do offer tastings, we just didnât have the time to make it happen). Instead, we picked up a few of their plain vanilla cupcakes to try, and loved them so much that we just knew any of their other flavors had to be amazing too. There were only a handful of guests at our wedding who were vegan, and less that were gluten-free, but we love simplicity so we decided going with only VGF cupcakes was the best move for us. When I say these cupcakes were a hitâŚit is an UNDERSTATEMENT. Every single person who tried one (Iâm not exaggerating) raved about them. I was worried, because I had originally ordered 105 cupcakes and forgot to change the number when our guest count dropped down to 79âŚbut by the end of the night there were less than 10 cupcakes left. In addition to being delicious, Eye Candy was great to work with and so professional. Iâm so grateful that...
Read moreEye Candy in Geneva is easily one of our favorite spots for gluten free treats. My daughter has celiac disease, and this is hands down her favorite bakery. Everything weâve tried has been absolutely delicious. Youâd honestly never know itâs gluten free because the treats are moist, flavorful, and beautifully made. So many gluten free desserts end up dry or crumbly, but not here. You can tell thereâs a lot of care put into the recipes.
If I had one small wish, it would be for longer or more consistent hours. I understand how much work goes into running a small business like this, and I imagine balancing it all is tough. But there have been a few times weâve gone by hoping to pick something up, only to find them closed. If they were open more often, I know weâd be regulars.
That said, I canât recommend Eye Candy enough, especially for families dealing with celiac. Itâs a special place that fills a real need in the community, and Iâm so...
Read moreI hate to leave less than 5 stars because I do want this business to thrive but it had to be said. A family member purchased a cake for me here and it was $150. The service and presentation of the cake were both excellent. I think the owner is very talented with design and good with customer service, however, the taste of the cake was disappointing. While I recognize that it is gluten-free, it lacked any discernible flavor, which I believe cannot solely be from using gluten-free flour. The cake itself was dense, dry, and not sweet. The frosting, which made up a significant portion of the cake, was also not sweet, resulting in a taste reminiscent of cold butter on bread. Iâm not trying to be disrespectful, I truly believe the owner may be unaware of this issue. Given the $150 price for a dessert, it seems reasonable to expect a certain level of sweetness, even in a gluten-free product. If not the cake itself then at least the frosting could...
