We had dinner reservations for 6:30, party of 10, on Sunday evening Mother's Day. We arrived at about 6:10, checked in & waited to be called. At about 6:30, my husband went to check on our table. At the same time, another party of 10 checked in at the hostess stand with another reservation for 6:30. There were three hostesses. The blonde hostess mistakenly took the party of 10 that JUST checked in & sat them, not paying attention. My husband questioned this bc we had been waiting for about 20 minutes at this point, & should've been sat before them. They apologized & told us they would sit us as soon as possible, so we continued to wait.
Little did we know, we would be waiting for over an hour before we were sat; meanwhile, these hostesses continued to sit 3-4 person parties at the smaller tables. When the hostesses finally "attempted" to sit us, they tried to sit us, a 10-person party with three large full-grown men, at a six person booth. They had us come check the table to ensure that this would be OK. At first, I thought they were going to add on an additional table to extend, so I told my husband that this would probably be what it was going to have to be. But no. I was wrong. They could not/would not pull an extra table up to the booth. They wanted all 10 of us to squeeze into the booth, & told us this was their only solution. At this point, I won't lie, I lost it. I told them this was not a solution, this was a joke, and that instead of sitting all of these 3-4 person parties that were freshly walking in, they should have been reserving the smaller tables as they cleared for the larger parties that had been waiting, & then I asked how they were going to fix this. (There was at least 3 other large groups waiting to be sat - one who even had reservations for 6:15.) The taller hostess with medium brown hair in a low ponytail offered me this solution: "Ma'am, you're free to go somewhere else." Y'all......livid doesn't describe it. I mean, seriously, what would you do if you had your whole family out to dinner to celebrate Mother's Day, including a five-year-old who was getting tired and irritable from having to wait for so long, even with reservations, which clearly meant nothing at this point, & then they try to squeeze your entire party into a small booth like that was a realistic solution, & then the hostess comes at you with that? Woosah! Luckily, the manager stepped in & apologized, saying he was just trying to get us sat, & understood my frustration. He admitted that this was only his sixth day working at the restaurant and that he had no idea what he was doing. Another server came up and also expressed his sympathy to us, saying that this had been going on since this morning and that the owner had been notified, didn't care, & refused to come in. He said he would do his best to get us sat & would hold on to one of his tables for us until one of his other tables got up.
At about 7:30, we were finally sat. Our server, Sky, really saved the day for us, thank goodness. Yes, it took forever for us to get drinks, it took forever for us to get food, the restaurant ran out of cups, they ran out of plates, and we were told that both of the bathrooms had been shut down because they had flooded, so we couldn't use the bathroom the entire time we were there. The entire building was completely collapsing. But Sky's upbeat personality & attention to our table really helped save the evening for me and my family.
Right after we were sat, the restaurant stopped taking patrons. We were the last table to leave the restaurant & we did not get home & get our kids in bed (on a school night, btw) until about 10:30. It is such a shame because my husband & I really enjoyed going to this restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious. But after this experience, I just don't know if we're coming back.
Happy Mother's Day to me...

Read moreThere isn’t an adjective I can use to summarize my experience at Chicago’s in one word. This experience was a night out of a fairy tale and I departed in complete satisfaction as it relates to the food, service, ambiance, and value.
Upon arrival I was greeted by two hostesses who both had a smile and greeted me with pleasant welcomes. I made my reservation via Open Table and was super happy that my table was ready upon my arrival.
Within moments of being seated, I was greeted by Ann Marie. She presented a very inviting welcome and you could feel her smile radiate from beneath her mask. As this was my first time at this restaurant I had quite a few questions and each one was met with a complete answer and great recommendations. Ann Marie displayed a level of professionalism and customer focused service that makes you enjoy time on site even more.
As my appetizer I decided to get carby and order the Basket of 4 Honey Butter Croissants and all I can say is, whew. The ratio of butter to honey presents a perfect balance of sweet and salty that plays well with the flaky croissant. This is a great dish to have alone or with a cup of tea/coffee. It presents itself as a play on sweet bread. Loved it!
As my entree I went with the Cowboy Ribeye (Ann Marie’s recommendation) paired with the Garlic Mashed Potatoes. Before I tell you my experience, let me say, I knew coming I wanted a steak. The reviews on Open Table praised the steak and I was in a steak kind of mood. Ann Marie helped me decide between the Cowboy Ribeye and Filet Mignon.
The ribeye was a perfect cut of meat and had a nice fat to meat ratio. It was perfectly grilled and provided a hint of char to allow your tongue to get lost in its layers. As it sat on the plate in its own juices the steak provided a nice natural gravy to the well flavored garlic mashed. This pairing is one that truly fills you up and satisfies the desire for a “Good Meal!” My compliments to the chef as this was a steak to remember.
As if the night couldn’t get any better. We happened to go on a night where a portion of the proceeds were going to one of the local charities. Talk about a great reason to order even more food. As such I ended up with the Carrot Cake.
The layered perfection of frosting and cake put me in a total zone. The cake was flavored exactly as a carrot cake should be. It had a great balance of sweet and earthy (carroty) goodness. The frosting is sweetened to perfection to sit on the cake and add that added burst of sugar satisfaction.
This restaurant is an absolute MUST TRY!

Read moreThis is the perfect type of place to take the in-laws. It’s classic American cuisine with no surprises. My in-laws love steak, seafood, chicken…standard American fare. All the usuals are here. The fried calamari, artichoke/spinach-type dip, a broad selection of soups, Caesar salad, some sort of salmon dish, chicken piccata… And this type of casual American food can be done well, and it can be done poorly, and this place knows their dishes, delivers a good experience and the servers really know how to handle the clientele! The servers are chatty and understand the menu well and know how to navigate the type of guest who is accustomed to having excellent (but unfussy) service when they dine. The portions are big without being overwhelming, and there’s enough choices on the menu that it’s not just limited to the standard American fare. (some items like bruschetta have actually migrated into the standard American fare repertoire, although they didn’t originate in North America).
The atmosphere is also unfussy, so that there are booths and it feels warm and welcoming, but the wood tones make it feel a little elegant. Nothing over the top. No outlandish decorations, no surprises, nothing to make people feel uncomfortable, no unusual or edgy artwork; it feels sort of standard American classic elegant-warmth. My in laws (and my teens) enjoy this type of American no-fuss cuisine. The other thing that’s great about Chicagos is that there are no food surprises. When you order your steak, it’s not going to come with an unexpected sauce. Nothing will be deconstructed without being noted on the menu. Your salmon will not be topped with ingredients that you’ve never heard of.
The drinks are strong and large.
The server is a quick with the menus. And the food comes out quickly. They are quick to take the bill and give you to-go boxes and they check in on you.
The perfect place to take the in-laws or the grandmothers, etc. and the teenagers can find something they like on the menu as well because it is big. I wish they had one of these in my hometown, because we have lots of unusual (amazing) cuisines, and sometimes we struggle finding something that is American enough for my family when they visit from Wisconsin as well.
Kudos to Chicagos for doing this type of food and...
