Tonight i had a horrible night at la gula. The bartender was very apprehensive, confrontational and very selective who he serviced. Through out the night he was mostly conversing with guest and drinking shots with those guests that he was aquatinted with and knew who they where. While not giving any attention to other guests. At last call i was told i couldnt get another drink but the people that ordered after me were able to get drinks after last call. After asking the people that got those drinks it was clear to me it was very selective due to them having previously worked at this location. How is that fair?A large heavier set gentlemen that works the bar other days it was his day off(directly behind person in la gula shirt in the picture) and another gentlemen that used to work at this location with longer curly hair to his shoulders that was able to get drinks after last call was placed. I was told by the bartender that they are encouraged to have drinks with customers to drive business.Yet they were not customer they are current and previous employees not guests. This took place on 12/3/22 i direly urge you to check camera footage to verify my claims. I made a comment to the bartender after serving those drinks. Asking why where we told No and you gave them drinks, he did not have an answer to give except studder the fact that it was passed last call and that i should leave. He then made a claim that he is a owner and that he doesnt care. That i should leave due to hes the owner and hes serving his peers. On my way out of the building he double handed middle fingered me. How is this appropriate for any business owner. It seemed as though he was much under the influence. Do Not Come Here. Both men behind the man in the la gula shirt where off but still behind the bar serving drinks for them selves after last call and starting problems with me and my guest saying to never...
Read moreThe wait is finally over and I finally got to enjoy a meal at La Gula on their 2nd day open. I expected there to be some glitches during opening week, but everything ran smoothly from my order through the delivery of the food to my table. My wife and I ordered the pollo and birria tacos. They were both street taco sized, each served on two soft taco tortillas. The tacos were overfilled with very flavorful marinated chicken (pollo) and braised beef and Oaxaca cheese (birria). Protip- since theses tacos are packed with filling and each has two tortillas, you can easily make two good sized street tacos out of each taco you order. We also had the plantain hush puppies which were unique and very tasty. I’d say you could eat them as an appetizer or a dessert. The plantain, retried beans and melted cheese are a wonderful sweet, savory and slightly salty treat.
Service is quick serve style, you order up front and your food is brought to your table. There is a full bar with beer, wine and spirits including many specialty drinks. The layout includes a small bar area with a tv, main dining room and a nice sized outdoor dining area.
I spoke to the manager and they plan to add a salsa bar in the near future, so for now just ask for any type of salsa when you order and they’ll bring it out for you. He also said they plan to add a brunch menu on the weekend, which I’m excited about since I’m within walking distance in case I need to walk off the extra calories and beer.
Based on the quality of the food and service during opening week, I’d say this is a major win for the neighborhood. If it’s this good in week 1, I can’t imagine how good it will be when they hit...
Read moreDreadful service. We waited over half an hour for our food. First order that came was the pizza, “El Al Pastor Hawaiano” I’d say it was a pretty decent pizza but soggy than your typical pizza. After a couple of minutes our hush puppies that we ordered arrived and I’d say it’s the only item on the menu I’d order again and recommend. After 10 minutes my burrito and torta of milanesa chicken arrived and they barely have taste, everything tasted so plain no flavor and truly very disappointing. I proceeded to lose my appetite as my taco de rajas and tater tots came. The item that took the longest was a single small taco barely the size of my hand. The taco wasn’t anything special I’d consider it okay, not much to say after all the food I tried. I understand the staff were busy and appreciate the service we received but you have only one person taking orders and answering the phone. We receive our food with no salsa, so having to go up to the cashier and wait at least 5-10 minutes to get attention to be able to at least be able to ask for salsa. I’d say perfect place for any non-Hispanic American to eat as they don’t necessarily have any set expectations to authentic Mexican food; recommending this place to an actual Hispanic or Mexican person would just respectfully be embarrassing. Looking for real authentic Mexican street food I’d definitely would prefer the other restaurants owned by the same owners like Ixtapalapa and their competitors...
