So... I love authentic Mexican food and while visiting a friend in Glenwood Springs we wanted to go out to eat... So we decided on Mexican and he brought me to Frida's. This is a newly opened restaurant and is on the upper floor. Ok let's get into it!
The good: Hey I think the place is very clean and has a neat vibe going. Everything looks new and it has a great layout. Most of the staff is friendly and did a great job greeting us as we walked in. We didn't have to wait long. It was busy but we were seated quickly. The food wasn't bad but not what I am used to. I ordered my favorite the chicken mole enchiladas, however it's not on the menu but they are able to do it. When I asked I was told there would be a nine dollar upcharge? Even with this shock I would say the portion size is about the same as other local authentic Mexican restaurants I have frequented for years. With that let's move onto the bad...
The bad: Can you say expensive? Items I saw on the menu started at $20. Things like chicken mole enchiladas mentioned above.. were not available but chicken en mole is. My shock was that they wanted to charge more for the enchiladas version over just the chicken en mole. Usually it's the other way round. Everything was more than my other local favorite authentic Mexican restaurants in town. I guess it's because they are new or closer to Aspen? I don't know. The meal I had was quite salty which was odd because everywhere else I get mole it's sweet. The server we had was average but did forget to bring salsa and chips... Which I was deathly afraid they were going to charge us for.. I suspected it might be $10. Even though it was salty it was good. My biggest complaint really is the absurd pricing. I just don't have the Aspen money I guess.
Parking out front is shared with the hotel and the business downstairs which I forget what it is... So it's tight. Also I did not see any kind of wheelchair accessibility unless they have a secret back door for that.
Personally I would only recommend this if you have to and don't want to get caught in Glenwood traffic heading downtown on a Friday night. U can wait it out here but bring your bankroll.
My friend had a margarita and had no complaints. I guess we will see what happens here.. but I'll almost definitely won't go back here. I'd much rather get the same for less downtown... You know.. by the Village Inn. There are two great options for realistic prices.
I will say... When the bill came they did not apparently charge the nine dollar upcharge for the mole enchiladas....
Read moreDisclaimer: we stopped for a late (2:45 PM) in-between lunch/dinner and the place was thinly attended. Review: the ambiance is that of a family restaurant, with measured south-of-the-border decor: clearly Mexican, but not over the top. Tables and booths are clean, no tablecloths of course, the upholstery of some of the booths may use some minor upkeep, but otherwise very pleasant. Piped music was appropriate in volume, mellow in ethnicity, and the place was quiet enough that a conversation with a normal tone of voice was no problem at all. Service was prompt; the switchover between lunch and inner is 3:00 PM an we were offered both options. We ended up ordering a seafood mostly-grilled combo ("parillada") to share, sized for two people. My expectation was relatively modest, and it was pleasantly blown off the chart! The platter included a selection of shellfish and fish, most of it perfectly grilled, a little of it baked, very little of it fried, including shrimp, mussel, (cooked) oyster, tilapia (I presume), and a snow crab leg and claw. All came over a bed of green lettuce, with a side of refried beans (we substituted this for the default rice). We could have had tortillas, but we did not. Condiments included a spicy green salsa (it was not tomatillo), which I liked a lot, and a more mellow red one, which I liked less. The platter was already seasoned with a brothy sauce that was just plainly awesome, with a well-balanced seafood-inspired umami-based flavor with additional spices. All shellfish was just right, tender, cooked but not overdone, well-flavored with a little scorched-grill accent. It could not have been better. Quantity was appropriate for a main meal, we finished all of it and were left not hungry and not overly stuffed. I cannot comment on anything else, but our experience deserves 4 stars. Our tab was around $25 per person (June 2022), before drinks; from the menu prices, this seems like a typical tab for Frida. Star guide: 1-avoid; 2-meh, pick another place if possible; 3-competent; 4-preferred, would come again; 5-destination:...
Read moreFrida's is a hidden gem in the city. It's a small, family-owned restaurant that serves up authentic Mexican food. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, and the service is friendly and attentive.
The menu is extensive, with something for everyone. I started with the guacamole and chips, which were both fresh and delicious. For my main course, I had the enchiladas suizas, which were cooked perfectly and smothered in a creamy, cheesy sauce. I also tried the chiles rellenos, which were stuffed with cheese and poblano peppers and then battered and fried. They were both amazing!
To finish my meal, I had a frozen margarita. It was the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Frida's. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was inviting. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great Mexican meal.
