Racism
Yesterday (Saturday-06/28/2025) around 10:45 a.m., my husband and I visited this local consignment store. As we both appreciate thriftiness, we enjoy discovering unique items in such establishments. Upon entering, I found a particularly interesting piece of art that I subsequently purchased. This week holds special significance for me, as it is my birthday week, and I have planned various celebratory activities, including a white water rafting trip. Following my enjoyable experience on a river the previous weekend, I decided to book another trip to explore a different river, having been an avid white water rafter for several years. It was an Amazing Day trip!!!
For context, I am a “black” man, and my husband is a “white” man. During our interaction with an employee, "Dee," she made comments that my husband and I found highly inappropriate and offensive. After recommending sunscreen, we informed her that we had already applied it. She then remarked, "I bet you get “blacker” when you're exposed to the sun." While attempting to maintain graciousness, I perceived her comment as a microaggression and deemed it a racist remark. She used the term “blacker” multiple times!!!!
Consequently, I have decided not to return to the establishment and will share my experience with my acquaintances. Her subsequent comment about her granddaughter and the reference to my husband's skin condition, which I explained to be rosacea, were also deemed inappropriate and unacceptable.
I am disappointed that I ever felt compelled to visit the establishment. The owner, the younger lady, was very kind and professional and even complimented me on my vehicle, as I am a taxicab driver. Notably, my husband and I both have affluent backgrounds. It appears that Dee was making judgments about us based on our appearances. Her behavior was unacceptable. I would also like to add that I am a member of the Aurora Branch of the NAACP, and I can assure you that other members of that nonprofit organization would have similar sentiments as me, pertaining to this situation. Unacceptable and very...
