We recently had a delightful afternoon in Gloucester, starting with lunch at 51 Rocky Neck. We were seated on the deck overlooking the inlet of the harbor with awesome views.
The "lahbstuh" roll was pricey but worth it - the biggest chunks of meat I had ever seen and of course fresh off the boats. One of our party had the smash burger and raved about. The chopped salad was heavy on the garbanzo beans but fresh and tasty. We shared an appetizer of the ribs, which were not done in the traditional barbecue sauce style - in fact they had no sauce at all. They were good but the flavor was a little too understated for my taste.
I saw a big glass container on the bar with pineapple rings immersed in liquid and decided I had to try what they call the Stoli Doli - that could become habit forming!
After lunch we walked down the ramp to their Pier, where the local tour boat/water taxi stops throughout the day. I definitely recommend checking that out - lots of interesting facts and history and the captain is a character! It stops in two other places, and you can get on and off to check out the other parts of the city.
After we got back to the pier, we spent some time perusing the shops in the artist colony and even met one of the artists whose artwork is displayed at 51 Rocky Neck. We stopped back in to the restaurant for drinks - it was a hot day and we really enjoyed the cross breeze through the open windows. We ended up staying for dinner. The pizza appetizer was more than enough for the four of us and was delicious. After seeing the portions at lunch my partner and I decided to share an entree and had the best scallops we've ever eaten! They came with a side of spaghetti squash, which was prepared differently than I had ever had it but it was really good.
Overall this was a great dining experience. The staff was very friendly, the decor is inviting and the menu is full of yummy sounding dishes that we can't wait to try the next...
Read moreMy husband and I took a trip up the east coast this month, and were on a mission for fresh seafood when we got to Gloucester. We had heard 51 Rocky Neck was a great place to go to satisfy our cravings, and boy was it! It's easy to find the requisite lobster rolls, fried calamari, and raw oysters at just about every restaurant in Gloucester, but this place did it all slightly different, and SO MUCH BETTER! The Frito Misto appetizer is a must, along with the lobster bisque. We only ordered a half dozen oysters, but could have easily eaten a full dozen they were so good. We had great service and learned a lot about the area from the friendly bartenders, and we enjoyed the ambiance and our views from the back deck. Apparently it had been raining a lot the past several weekends, but we lucked out with great weather. If you can sit out on the back deck, I highly recommend it, but make sure you spend time inside as well. It was absolutely beautiful, and I loved all of the paintings from the local artists. Make sure you meet Patrick, the owner. We had a lovely chat, and his knowledge of food, wine and service and his commitment to it all was so refreshing. I look forward to making this an annual stop on our...
Read moreExcellent food and beautiful location made for a relaxing evening. We sampled 8-9 items off the menu. All were good, 3 were outstanding. The lobster bisque was a large serving for the price with 2 large chunks of lobster floating in a creamy smooth soup. It also had what I thought was a touch of squash flavor that enhanced the lobster bisque flavor. A must try. The frita misto also was a notch above the usual restaurant calamari. So much more than just fried squid. Fried shrimp, leeks, fennel and sweet potatoes all were welcome additions to the dish. The size of the platter was large enough to satisfy 4 as an appetizer. The lamby pops entree was a nice change up to all the seafood. And I love lamb. These pops were exactly what I needed to satisfy my hankering. Worth mentioning and trying were the deviled eggs ( nice heat with the horseradish) and the lobster roll ( good amount of lobster, MP is always too rich for me). The location on the cove can't be beat. Lots of deck seating. Very peaceful. Patrick the owner has created a place were you can escape the beach crowds, kick back with a cocktail...
