Chang Thong — Restaurant in Grass Valley

I must admit I’m usually wary when someone does Thai/Viet/Japanese at the same time, but this place was highly recommended so we tried it out. Immediately met by the nicest servers (both times). Our first meal we started with the shrimp spring rolls- and they were so good we got them the next day as well. Perfectly cooked shrimp, warm and delicious peanut sauce - herbs and lettuces fresh and crisp- truly a perfect snack. We both then decided on the combo pho for our first meal there. And OMG !! I don’t say this hyperbolically when I say this was probably the best pho I’ve ever had - most definitely the best meat I’ve had in pho - perfectly tender meat balls, thick cut melty brisket, gelatinous and unctuous tendon, veal rib meat was new for me but texturally intriguing and tasty, thick cut rare steak - so. Much. Meat. The value for what you get is truly insane. The broth was dynamic and rich - such good subtle flavors. Truly a perfect bowl of soup. IF I had to strongman this point it would be the bowl was TOO big. Such a wide bowl makes you want to fill it up more. As a chef/owner I’d recommend less meat so the profits were higher - but they want to please the people, and that’s rare these days. DON’T neglect the chili-garlic oil !! I bought a jar on the way out :)

The next day we had to go back for a quick snack. Spring rolls again (YUM) and this time we went with the pad Thai with beef. ABSOLUTELY loved it. Well balanced sauce, tender beef, and a huge portion. nailed it again.

I cant wait to try the ramen. This sweet husband and wife combo that own the joint are so kind and she is obviously an incredible chef. And you KNOW when you hear southeast Asian ladies talking and laughing in the kitchen, you’re going to be in for a treat. out as authentic as any place I’ve been, especially in a white-washed Nevada county. 5 stars and a standing ovation for the Golden Elephant, Chang Thong...

So I really hate to give this place not full stars. I went there with a couple friends last night and I sat there 4I don't know 20 minutes without my food. My friends had gotten theirs and I assumed mine would be out. So of course, I told them to start eating, so theirs didn't get cold. Assumed, if there was some type of error the waitress would come by and ask them how their food was, and we would just say, Hey, mine has not come yet. Nobody ever came and asked them how their food was. There was 3 staff consistently through the dining area. Nobody ever noticed that I didn't have any food. I can understand a little bit and I give some grace but at some point when they gave us water one of the 2 times they should have said. Do you need anything considering my friends were eating and I was not. Mind you We could've said something a little bit sooner, but they were really busy and I was trying to be pleasant. Once we did, the owner's wife rushed out and was super apologetic. The food was absolutely amazing. Oh my goodness I could not say enough good things about it about it. I could save staff might use a little bit of awareness of what's going on in their dining area. They are off to a great start and I see wonderful things...

Chang Thong is undoubtedly one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. I recently visited with my friend and her 5-month-old son, and I brought along my 4-month-old daughter. The service and food were exceptional, but what truly stood out was the incredible compassion and responsiveness of the owner.

While my friend was packing up our food, I was holding both babies when my daughter began to get fussy. As a new mom, I felt embarrassed and a bit anxious in that moment. To my surprise, the owner approached me and kindly offered to help with my daughter. Without hesitation, I accepted her offer, and within moments, she had my daughter calmed down. It was incredible to watch—she walked around with her, talking to her and soothing her as if she had done this a thousand times before.

I was amazed by the owner’s natural ability with children and so grateful for her support during what could have been a stressful situation. She introduced herself as the owner and also introduced me to her husband. I was so impressed by their swift and thoughtful response, but even more so by their genuine kindness.
