We come to WI once in a while mostly visiting the Public Market and especially St Paul's. Since we live in downtown Chicago, unless the food is worth it we won't make the drive. We decided to give this place a try after visiting the Public Market and seeing the high ratings with over 8000 reviews. It is not easy to find old school frozen custard places these days unless you are out in the sticks. We didn't make it the first time around since it was a hot day and the line was out onto the street, but we made it the second time around. There was no wait on the custard side so it was quick. This review is for the frozen custard only, not sure about the burgers and other foods but burgers are just burgers, fries are just fries. What makes frozen custard different from ice cream is just the egg yolk, which gives the richer, thicker and creamier texture. This place does it nicely, but no wow factor whatsoever. There are only 2 standard flavors (vanilla and chocolate) plus the flavors of the day, butter pecan and cherry cycle, 4 flavors total. I guess you just have to come on a different day for the more exotic flavors like Red Velvet Oreo. The limitation is a big minus for me, probably also explains why there was no wait that day, maybe. Compare to the Jeni's in Chicago (and can be purchased in groceries stores and even Target), this is no comparison in my opinion. It is just same old boring frozen custard and definitely won't be part of the trip, but the portion is huge, single scope is probably equavalent to half a pin, no joke, and for $3 plus only, but you get what you...

Add to that a constantly-changing frozen custard flavor of the day, and you have the recipe for a glorious culinary experience that you don't have to dress up for.
You can eat in if you choose, the accommodations are pretty much "here's a bench, go sit on it and eat your food", or if the weather is nice there are tables outside. We tend to just grab and go, as we're only a couple miles away and prefer to eat at home.
There's an app and a website so you can see what flavors are happening on what day (monthly list published at start of each month), to look for your favorites. Not to knock the statewide competition, but many competitors' flavors of the day seem to always be "put crumbled Oreos in something." Not so with Kopps, there are always interesting and yummy combinations. Among our favorites are the relatively rare appearances of:
Chocolate bourbon pecan pie French silk pie Spumoni Anything at all with rum-based custard Pistachio nut
A couple times per month you can have a variant of turtle, or Banana walnut chocolate chunk, Tiramisu, or Reese's peanut butter kupps. Rarely is there a day when both flavors are only meh.
Always clean, usually fast if only getting custard, plan on a bit more than a fast-food wait if ordering from the grill (excellence takes time, and they don't just cook 20 burgers in the hope that someone...
Read moreI would normally give Kopp's 5 stars because the food is usually really good and the portions are huge, but the last few times we've been there the food wasn't great. This last time was especially bad. We ordered 3 burgers, a chicken sandwich, 2 orders of fries and onion rings for our family- a slightly bigger order, but not so huge that it should have taken a long time to make. I'm not sure if our order got messed up or lost somehow because it took an abnormally long time for our order to get called up. By the time we ended up getting our food, it was cold. The fries were pretty much inedible and we had to throw most of them away (my kids didn't even want them, and they will eat week old cardboard fries straight from the fridge!). My husband loves this place, and even he said he didn't want to come back for while.
I'd chalk it up to just a bad night, but this has happened now more than once and at least two times in a row. Kopp's is about a 45 minute drive for us and is a bit on the pricier side, but it's usually worth the splurge since it's my husband's favorite restaurant and the food is usually quite good. I'm still giving 4 stars though because historically they have been good. We'll see how they do the next time we visit and update accordingly. Hopefully the next time they will be...
